Robert Coale Obituary

Robert "Bob" Edward Coale, Jr.
October 26, 1928 - May 21, 2022
Robert "Bob" Edward Coale, Jr. died peacefully on May 21, 2022. During his 93 years, Bob lived a fun, active, colorful and rewarding life, even after battling Parkinson's disease in his later years, and was a sweet, kind man with a twinkle in his eyes. Bob was born at the Memorial Baptist Hospital in Houston and was the only child of Floreed and Robert Coale of Beaumont, TX. The family moved from Beaumont to Houston a few years after his father founded Coale Roofing & Distributing Co. in 1927.

Bob graduated from Lamar High School in 1945, attended junior college at Schreiner Military and was elected to the Phi Theta Kappa scholastic fraternity. He then entered the University of Texas in Austin, joined the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and received a BBA degree in 1949. After graduation, he joined his father at Coale Roofing, which focused on elite Houston neighborhoods, dubbing him the nickname of the "Society Roofer". He enlisted in the US Naval Reserves in the 1950s and was based on the USS Lexington and assigned to a special classified unit. He loved to play competitive tennis, gaining another nickname, "Cement Foot", and also enjoyed bird hunting, playing golf, watching college football, entertaining friends and spending time at his small ranch in Brenham, riding his tractor and raising Longhorn cattle. But most of all, he loved being with his wife of 64 years, Mary Wade.

Bob had an active social life and dedicated time serving the community. After college, he joined the Houston Junior Chamber of Commerce and led the Miss Houston Contest, which in his words, "proved a very enjoyable time". He was also a member of the Western Houston Kiwanis, was an active leader in the Executives Association of Houston and was a former Trustee on the Board of the Open Door Mission. He was a past member of the Houston Racquet Club, the 100 Dance Club, and had been a current member of the Houston Country Club since l973. He served on the board of Chapelwood Methodist Church and was instrumental in setting up the first ushering program.

Bob is survived by his two daughters, Carol Coale and Susan Weaver (Scot Weaver), his three granddaughters, Katie Walker (Michael Walker), Mary Margaret Weaver, Ellie Janes (Benjamin Janes) and great-grandson, Noah Walker. A very special thanks goes to the care partners, nurses and staff at the Tradition Woodway in addition to his independent caregivers who served him in both current and past years. A memorial service will be held at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay St., Houston, TX, 77024 on Thursday, June 2nd at 2:00pm. A reception will follow in the Chapelwood Fellowship Hall immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Houston Area Parkinson Society or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Carol and Susan,
I had the pleasure of meeting your father in 2018. We had lunch with his friend John to talk about his life and their friendship. I'm uploading one of the photos to this Legacy.com obituary. I imagine most people who met him would have loved to spend time listening to his wonderful life story. In this photograph, he sits among the best and brightest of his friends.

Carol .. I did not know your Daddy but I know you .. his legacy .. and that is a job well done in leaving you to be in this world to carry on the values and performance as a member of society bestowed on you by this Mom and Dad of yours. May God give you peace in knowing he was a member of the "a life well lived club". And may God hold you in his arms and all your family as you grieve the loss of your Daddy. All love Elizabeth
