Roger Bonney, a distinguished resident of Houston, Texas, peacefully passed away on September 17, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. Born on June 11, 1931 at St. Josephs Hospital in Houston, Texas, Roger was a man of exceptional achievements and unwavering dedication throughout his life.
Roger's educational journey began in Houston Public Schools, culminating in his graduation from S.F. Austin High School in 1949. He continued his pursuit of knowledge at Rice University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Economics in 1953. His thirst for learning led him to the University of Texas School of Law, where he obtained his J.D. in 1956.
Roger's professional career was marked by excellence and service. He joined the State Bar of Texas in 1956 and became a Certified Public Accountant, a distinction he held throughout his life. Roger served his country in the U.S. Naval Reserve, Supply Corps, from 1956 to 1968, with active duty from 1956 to 1960.
His remarkable career with Exxon, U.S.A., spanned three decades, from 1956 to 1986. He held various key roles, including Tax Manager for the Southeast Division, Chief Tax Council, and Tax Policy Coordinator. Roger's dedication to his work extended beyond Exxon, as he contributed to the American Bar Association Section of Taxation on numerous committees and the Houston Bar Association.
Roger's influence in the realm of taxation was extensive, notably as Chairman of the American Petroleum Institute General Committee on Taxation. He also served on the University of Houston Law Center faculty as an Adjunct Professor in State and Local Tax from 1988 to 1998. His expertise even extended globally, as he participated in the Russian Petroleum Legislative Project on Tax from 1992 to 1993.
On August 17, 1956, Roger married Patricia S. Hinrichsen in Houston, TX, and together they built a loving family.
Roger found love again, and on March 9, 1999, he married Jean Garmany Heidner in Houston, TX, creating a beautiful second chapter in his life.
Roger Bonney leaves behind a legacy of excellence, dedication, and a commitment to his family, community, and profession. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
