James Shepard Obituary

James Martin Shepard 1972 - 2011 James Martin Shepard left us on Saturday, July 30, 2011, at peace and at home, surrounded by his family and friends. He passed too early, a few days short of his 39th birthday, and we all miss him terribly. Born August 17, 1972 in San Francisco to John Shepard and Elinor Sturm, -Martin- as he was known to his friends, moved to Boise to attend Boise State where he received his BA in science in 2003, and his Masters in 2007. With his older brother John, Martin started a successful local printing business, and later a publishing house, Borderline Publishing, that printed and distributed local writers. Martin was an avid reader all his life, and co-authored the book Boise Anthem. Martin served in the Idaho National Guard, and during the height of the Iraqi War worked as a logistics manager in Bagdad for Halliburton. Travel, the company of his many friends, and working around his house and yard in his limited spare time were some of his favorite things. Martin is survived by his partner and long-time best friend Michelle Bengochea of Nampa, his father and mother, John and Shelley Shepard of Boise, his biological mother Elinor Sturm of Oakland, California, and siblings John Sitges Shepard and Lisa Shepard, also of Nampa. A military Honor Guard Ceremony will be held Saturday, August 27th, at 11:00 AM at Cloverdale Cemetery, followed by a joyful remembrance and memorial at the home of Scott and Karen Bengochea of Boise. We hope to see many of Martin's friends there. Please RSVP (714) 457-7567.

You could always tell where Martin was because it was where everyone was gathering. You brought us happiness and laughter. You made us all feel special and good about ourselves.

I miss you. I miss your sense of humor, your kindness, your thoughtfulness, and your helpfulness. You watched Warriors’ games with Jeff and myself, you made us laugh, you made us happy, you offered to cook for us, and you always asked me about my day at work and about my kids--even though you were dealing with so much. I wanted so much for a good outcome for you. I admired your courage and that you were both honest and real about your illness, yet still hopeful and always upbeat. Sometimes it takes a bad situation before one can fully realize how special someone really is, and you really were very special. I wish you were still here. I will always hold you in my heart and I will always remember you. Much love to you, Laura

Words can never fully express how a person can touch a life. Miss you. Prayers are floating your way.

I'll always remember the two funniest things Martin said to me. First... "If he had a bar in Utah, he would name it Jack's." Second... "He found the best diet that works was eat less, work out more... but he currently wasn't on that diet." That will always make me laugh.

You were more a brother than a friend. "For he who sheds his blood with me shall be my brother."

Though you are terribly missed, we hope to see you one day in Fiddler's Green, where all fallen Cavalrymen go. Rest in peace, my friend.
