Shane Meyer Obituary

Shane Steven Meyer
May 8, 1989 ~ September 14, 2015
Albert Einstein used a simple image to describe his fundamental insight that gravity was the curving of the fabric of spacetime: "When a blind beetle crawls over the surface of a curved branch, it doesn't notice that the track it has covered is indeed curved," he said. "I was lucky enough to notice what the beetle didn't notice."
Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing Shane Meyer, who tragically died at St. Luke's Hospital on Monday, Sept. 14, felt lucky to have been the recipient of his gentle notice. His happy and fun-loving spirit enriched those touched by it and made those within his universe better people.
Shane was born in Pocatello with the smile, sunny disposition, ability to light up a room, and athletic prowess that he never lost. His love of sleeping, back, head and foot rubs, snuggling, long soaks in the bath, Calvin & Hobbs, Redfish Lake with his dad and brothers, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, animals, his mom's lasagna, and the San Francisco 49ers survived his childhood – as did all things sport.
Shane was a born athlete and excelled at every sport he tried: wakeboarding, snowboarding, softball, golf – which he tried to play every day of the week – and soccer. Especially soccer. Shane loved soccer and played it well – as a youth player and at the Varsity and College level. He continued to play men's league baseball and soccer right to the end.
When Shane was 8 years old, he expressed interest in trying out and playing for only one soccer club: Boise Nationals Soccer Club. His reason? He was convinced BNSC was the only club to own its own charter bus. BNSC did not own its own bus, as it turned out. Undeterred, Shane spent many happy years playing for and captaining his BNSC soccer team. His club team won numerous State Cup titles and represented Idaho at Region IV Soccer tournaments throughout the West.
He went on to captain the Timberline High School soccer team where he received high praise for his leadership qualities. Shane always remained above the fray, elevated the play of the team's weakest players and brought only positive and wonderful energy to team activities. At every level of the game, he made solid friendships that lasted throughout his life and proudly wore his favorite number on his jersey: lucky number 13.
Shane graduated from Timberline High School in 2007 and from the University of Idaho in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation. He was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and served as academic chair and recruiter where he again made steadfastly supportive and lasting friendships. He participated in as many intramural sports as he could during his years at the U of I and made time to coach youth soccer teams in Moscow.
After graduation, Shane returned to Boise where he interned for Meridian Parks and Recreation and managed youth programs. Last year, Shane joined the salesforce at Bodybuilding.com. He loved sales and was recently promoted to trainer. After receiving his first paycheck, Shane borrowed his dad's car on the pretext that he needed it to deposit the check in the bank, filled it up with gas and returned it with a "My treat!"
His mom, Lori, shared her love of good food and good music with Shane. The Grateful Dead and Dave Mathews Band were among his favorites, surpassed only by "Meyer Music" – the original pieces of music written and performed by his talented older brother, Jason.
Shane's nicknames were many: Shaney, Shaney B., Shaner, Sweet Baby, Shizz, Shizzy, and Sweet Baby Boy.
He was a quiet competitor, remaining calm and determined throughout his life. Shane was a man of character, a stand-up guy who never had an ill word for anyone.
While overwhelmed by the great weight of Shane's passing, we are grateful that he took the time to notice us, care about us, and love us. We will cherish his memory in our hearts and minds as "Sweet Baby" is now gravity free.
Shane is survived by his mother, Lori Ruman (Boise); his father, Robert "Bob" Meyer (Boise); brother, Carson Meyer (Boise); maternal grandmother, Mary Cordes (Carson City); 100 year-old great grandmother, Belinda Jerdon (California); paternal grandmother, Marge Meyer (Pocatello); aunts and uncles: Susie and Unca Jim; Michelle and Bill; Alana and Richard; Rachelle and Mike; numerous cousins; a large multi-generational family in Nevada and California; and, a huge tribe of close friends dating back to grade school. Shane is preceded in death by "Big Brudda" Jason Meyer.
A public visitation is planned at Summers Funeral Home, 1205 W. Bannock Street, Boise, Wednesday, Sept, 23, from 6-8 pm. A visitation is also planned at El Korah Shrine, 1118 W Idaho St, Boise, Thursday, Sept. 24, from 12-1 pm, followed immediately by a memorial officiated by Reverend Ron Matheney and graveside services at Pioneer Cemetery, 460 E. Warm Springs Avenue. Family and friends are invited to reconvene at El Korah Shrine at 4 pm for dinner, drinks, music, games, and memories.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Shane Meyer's name to the Boise Nationals Soccer Club Scholarship Fund. Funds will be collected and distributed through Idaho Independent Bank, Attn: Debbie, 401 W. Front St. Suite 200, Boise, ID, 83702 (208) 947-5334.

Dear Shane,

It has been one year since you were laid to rest and it has been a tough year at that. I have found ways to cope with your loss as I have a daily ritual and it brings me great comfort. People often ask on Facebook, if there was one person you could bring back from the dead, I cannot choose. I could not ask you to come back and leave your brother in Heaven; that would not be fair. And the same goes for Jason, I could not do that to you. So, my answer would be my maternal Grandfather, William Lawrence Towne. He was a great man and I would ask him what it's like being with you guys...he would give his smirk and say that everything is ok. And that's all I would need to hear. I love you with all my heart, Shane. I miss you dearly.

Sweet baby,
There isn't a day that goes by without you crossing my mind. There is a void in every day without your smile. Tatum misses her Unkie and hasn't slept in anything other than your BNSC jersey. I want to thank you for being there for me countless nights when I'd call/text about missing your brother. And for all the hugs, jokes and love you shared with Tatum and me.

Lori, my heart is so heavy with sadness for you as I look at your beautiful son, Shane, and remember he and Jason as little dark haired boys, running around laughing and punching each other at Alive after Five. They were so full of adventure and both had such wonderful spirits. You have always been such a fun, loving mom and should never have had to be where you are right now. I wish I had the words to heal your heart but I know there are none. I didn't get to see your boys as they grew into young men but I see that they both have touched so many lives and have each created so many beautiful memories with friends and family. They have made a distinct footprint in this life and will not be forgotten. Love you Lori and am thinking of you constantly.

Shane, you were one of the best! I will forever remember the toughest shot in golf (double Eagle) made by you on the 9th holes at Boise Ranch. Yet, your humbleness was even greater. I learned a few lessons that day. Miss you friend.

You touched my son Brad's life, therefore, you touched mine. Thank you for that. I only had a few interactions with you, but I could tell you were a really special person. And I know Brad really thought the world of you. I look forward to playing a round of golf in Heaven with you someday. Till then, watch over all of us, and know how much you were loved.

Dear Shaney,

It has been a week since we lost you. Your passing has touched many lives as you were a great friend, a terrific and loving son and a wonderful nephew.

As time goes by and we prepare to lay you to rest, so many thoughts of you have risen to my mind's eye. As I reflect back on your early years, the memories of you as a baby and a child have made me smile in the most of difficult times. I am so proud of your accomplishments as a soccer player, a college graduate and for being a fine young man.

When I am alone or not keeping myself busy, I think of your mom. She has endured the most tragic of circumstances, losing you and your brother, Jason. She has a very strong support system and that gives me comfort. When all the visitors have gone home, I wonder how she will cope with your loss. She will need signs from you that you are ok, that you have found Jason and the two of you must give her comfort in her darkest of days. No mother should ever have to bury their son and in her case, sons.

I will miss you with my entire being and some day I will see you again. I love you Shane and I will never forget your smile.

Love eternally, Aunt Susie
