Weston Laney Obituary

Weston Howard Laney
1932-2017
Weston Howard Laney, 85, of Boise, Idaho, passed away April 26, 2017 while in the tender care of St Luke's Hospital with his loving wife at his side. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday April 29th, at the LDS Chapel at 3229 Bogus Basin Road, in Boise, Idaho. Friends may meet with the family beginning at 9:30 10:45 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at Dry Creek Cemetery. Condolences can be left at relyeafuneralchapel.com.
Weston was born March 29, 1932 to Clifton Isaac Laney and Holly Fern Warr in Park City, UT and lived in Kamas, UT for a few years until his family moved to Emmett, Idaho to start up a dairy farm and where his father served as Bishop of the Emmett Ward of the LDS Church. They later moved to Ontario, OR where Weston finished High School. He was a junior home teaching companion to Jerold Montgomery, where he saw one of his beautiful daughters Velma. Weston attended a year at BYU and wanted to go on a mission but the outbreak of the Korean War made that impossible, so he enlisted in the US Coast Guard. When his service was completed he returned to Boise to attend BSU and reconnected with Velma. On Halloween 1954 he took her trick or treating and proposed. She accepted, and they were married on June 7, 1955, in the Salt Lake LDS temple and returned to Boise to live. He was recruited to become an agent for State Farm Insurance in 1960. He served the needs of Boise residents for 39 years as a caring and successful State Farm Agent retiring in 1999. Wes and Velma were blessed with five children – Gary, Jeff, Steve, Valerie and Patrick. He was a lifelong member of the LDS Church and devoted his life to serving God, his family, and his fellow man. He served as a stake missionary, Bishops Counselor, Scout Master, Bishop of two Wards, Stake President, and as the Boise Idaho Stake Patriarch. Wes and Velma served as a missionary couple to the Boise State LDS Institute and a full time mission to Tiffan, OH and then as temple workers in the Boise Idaho LDS Temple.
Weston is survived by his devoted wife Velma, a brother, Clifton Laney, two sisters, Bess Hallam, Margaret Feik, and his children: Gary (Calista) Laney, Jeff (Carol) Laney, Steve Laney, Valerie (Chris) Galbraith, and Patrick's widow, Lori Laney (Niles) Gooding, 18 Grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Patrick, his sisters Nelda, Ella, Barbara, Lois, Marjorie and a brother David, a granddaughter Christa Galbraith, and a great granddaughter, Addison Englehorn.

Wes Laney was one of God's very best! Loved that guy and the service he rendered to the community and his church. He and Velma were a special team. Great friends, church workers and Latter-day Saints.

Wes Laney's dad was a great friend of the youth in the Boise area. He held Sunday evening firesides in his home every Sunday evening.

Love the Laney family!

Wes Laney was one of God's very best! The Bastians loved and admired him for his friendship, service, dedication to the Lord, and his wife and family. Through him, the Bastians became friends with his outstanding family. Great, great people!

We have nothing but high accolades for Brother Wes, his wife and family and the life he lived! God bless you all!

Dear Velma: So, so sorry. I hadn't heard of Wes' passing. My heart goes out to you. What a great, wise, caring man he was. I still remember some of the things he taught while he was at the Institute: "You can't make someone like you, you can only make yourself more likable." I remember one time he said he thought he was about where he wanted to be spiritually. How would it be?! And remember that dream he had about you folks going on a mission, as instructed by President Hinckley.
Such good memories. And my dad loved him, especially when Dad was the patriarch and Wes was his stake president.
And of course all of us in our family loved (and worshiped!) Wes' dad, Bishop Laney. What a noble heritage.
And then there were your good boys that I taught in seminary at Boise High.
Lots of connections.
And so sad about Sister Bess Hallam. What a great lady she was, here in our stake, 98 years old.
We love you all. May the Lord bless you.

Wes Laney was a giant among men; and a welcomed addition to the human family and our circle of friends. We are better people because of the Wes Laney and his family.

We send our love and sympathy; and salute you for being such bright stars and walking examples.

After nearly a century of life away from his heavenly abode, Wes has been called home to report his stewardship and receive the further light and knowledge his Lord has promised to send him. He has heard the voice of the spirit in this life; and he will shall behold the the face of God in his new existence.

He has fought a good fight and kept the faith and has won a crown of righteousness. He has now entered into the joy of the Lord whom he has served so well.

Please know we love and admire the Laney family. Never forget our faith and prayers are with you.

Oh Laneys! We love you! We love your dad and your entire family. We have so many fond memories of 3 generations of Laneys. CI Laney was in our ward when we were children and he was a family hero. Our father loved him so much that we couldn't help but love him too. Your dad was our parents insurance agent and good friend forever, it seems. He was always so good to them. And we grew up with the lot of you! It seems like there is a Laney for every Hulme. Thank you for your shining examples to all of us and for your friendship and love. It is a beautiful thing to see how the gospel of Jesus Christ creates beautiful families like yours. We know you will miss your dad. We will too. But won't we all have a great time in the next life!!! Our best to all of you! Love, Heidi and the rest of the Harold Hulme family

Pat and I remember moving into the Twelfth Ward on Broadway Avenue over fifty years ago and attending church there with the Laney's of the Sixth Ward. We also knew Wes' parents and his son Gary and wife Calista in the Twenty-fifth Ward before leaving Boise in 1987 and all through these years, we admired the Laney family. We now send them our love and best wishes at this difficult time in their lives. Sincerely,
George and Pat Fuhriman, St. Louis, Missouri
