Mable Geathers Obituary

Mable Delores Reid Geathers

October 23, 1946 - April 22, 2023

Mable Delores Reid Geathers departed her earthly life on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at the age of 76, in Kannapolis, North Carolina after a courageous and lengthy battle with a long standing illness. For all who knew her, Mable was a vibrant, joyful woman who lived a life full of grace and compassion for others. We will forever cherish our fond and loving memories of her enjoying her life to the fullest and helping others to do the same.

Mable or "Sister" as she was affectionately known by her siblings, was one of eleven children born to Iola and Elbert Reid on October 23, 1946. She grew up in the Gibbs Wood section of Currituck, North Carolina, and graduated Salutatorian from Currituck Union High School. She later attended Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. There, she met the love of her life and devoted life partner, Kenneth Geathers Sr. from Charleston, South Carolina, and the two were married in 1970.

After marrying, Mable and Ken relocated to Kannapolis, North Carolina where they cultivated a long and fruitful marriage of 53 years in the community. Born to this union were two children, a daughter, Michele, and a son, Kenneth Jr., whom Mable loved dearly.

Mable was employed in the accounts payable department at Cannon Mills in Kannapolis and later served as a deputy clerk with the Cabarrus County Clerk of Superior Court, where she worked for over 30 years before retiring.

She was also an active member of First Baptist Church in Kannapolis, N.C., where she dutifully worked in several areas of ministry, including serving as President of the Usher Board, Superintendent of Sunday School, a Girl Scout Troop Leader, a Sunday School teacher, a missionary, and a supporter of the youth ministry.

While we are heartbroken by her loss and will miss her dearly, we take great comfort in knowing that she is wrapped in the arms of our Heavenly Father. Mable leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Kenneth Geathers Sr., their children, Daughter Michele Delores Geathers McPhatter (Quentin) of Gastonia, N.C., Son Kenneth Geathers Jr. of Hickory, N.C., and Son Kevin Williams of North Charleston, S.C.; four grandchildren, Jamar Witherspoon of Charlotte, N.C., Darius Witherspoon of Kannapolis, N.C., Kendall McPhatter of Gastonia, N.C. and Krista McPhatter of Gastonia, N.C.; five sisters, Fannie Reid of Harlem N.Y., Audrey Riddick, (Cleveland) of Greensboro, N.C., Christine Rowe of Cheverly, Md., Jackie Tisdale (Keith) of Chesapeake, Va., Iris Harris (Vincent), of Virginia Beach, Va., two brothers, James Reid, of Norfolk, Va. and Elbert Reid of Fayetteville, N.C.; special nephew Patrick Reid of Ky., several close sisters in law, Ann Reid of Virginia Beach, Va., Sandra Gethers White of Charleston, S.C., Audrey Gethers, of Charleston, S.C. and Marie Matthews (Barry) of Greenville, S.C., as well as a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Elbert and Iola Reid, two brothers Wilbert and David Reid, and a sister Paulette Richardson.

Service for Mable Geathers will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023. At First Baptist Church, 1311 E. First Street, Kannapolis, NC 28083. Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. with service at 1 p.m.
