Darwin Henry Bien
89, of Plymouth, Massachusetts, formerly of Carmel, Indiana and Belleville, Illinois died Sunday April 15, 2012 at Wingate Skilled Nursing Center in Kingston, Massachusetts.
Mr. Bien was the Vice President of Purchasing for the Empire Stove Company of Belleville, Illinois, a founding member of the Clinton Hill Country Club in Swansea, Illinois, owned and operated West Boulevard Miniature Golf and for a time leased and operated Phillips Driving Range on East 59th Street in Belleville, Illinois. Mr. Bien is also a past member of Rotary International and the Belleville Elks Lodge #481. Mr. Bien also served his Country in the United States Army.
Darwin was born in Belleville, Illinois May 21, 1922, the fifth of seven Children to Louise M. Doerr and William J. Bien. Darwin attended Dewey Elementary and Belleville Township High School, where with his brother Cal, won the 1939 Southwestern Conference Tennis Championship, winning all of the Maroon points for the team. Darwin went on to attend Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri.
Darwin was preceded in Death by his Parents, Brother Kenneth, Brother Warren and Sisters Bernice Bien Eigenbroat and Marilyn Bien Vrooman.
Surviving are his Wife of 59 Years, the former Florence Leslie Kaufman, his Daughter Barbara Bien of Carmel, Indiana, his son Thomas and Son in Law Sumner of Plymouth, Massachusetts, Grandchildren, Allison (John) Hardt of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Adam Maas of Miami, Florida, Brother Cal Bien of Laguna Woods, California and Sister Betty Evelyn Foley of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.
Memorials in honor of Darwin may be made to the Alzheimer's Association National Office; 225 North Michigan Avenue; Fl. #17, Chicago, Illinois 60601.
At Darwin's request, his body will be cremated and private family services will be held.
