Helen Chiu

Chiu Helen (nee Lienhard) Passed away on February 3, 2024 in Haverford. Helen was born to John and Florence Lienhard in Hartford, Connecticut on June 10, 1937. She was preceded in death by her husband, S. Ming Chiu, and her sister Alyce. Helen graduated from Skidmore College in 1959 and worked in Hartford for a few years afterward. After earning a Master's Degree in International Affairs from American University in Washington, D.C., Helen worked for the American Red Cross in Turkey and Europe where she planned recreational activities for the American soldiers at various bases. After several years working in Europe, Helen moved to Philadelphia where she worked for the International House. While earning her PhD in government from Temple University, Helen met her future husband, Ming Chiu, professor of history at Temple. They married in 1970. Helen taught government classes at various colleges in the Philadelphia area during the 1970s. After 1972 Helen and her husband also led tours to China in the summers. Helen and her husband lived in Bala Cynwyd for many years until they moved to Haverford. Helen is survived by her sister, Anne Heinsohn and her nieces Janet Glass and Elizabeth Heinsohn. Helen will be buried with her husband in the West Laurel Hill Cemetery. There will be no services.
