John Church Obituary

CHURCH


JOHN W. CHURCH, JR. "JACK", of Hershey's Mill PA and Stone Harbor NJ, died on April 17, 2006, at the age of 73. Beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Baker Church and Joanna Sadtler Church; loving father of Emilie (Mimi) Church Smiley and her husband Frank, and John Wheeler Church, III and his fiancée Monica; grandfather of Kathryn Tessier Smiley; dear brother of Barbara Hofmann and Sally Officer.
Jack was born in Painesville OH, in 1932, and was raised in Pittsburgh PA. He graduated from Shady Side Academy in 1950 and Bowdoin College in 1954. He was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. His investment career began at the New York Trust Company in 1957 and moved to Franklin Cole and Company, an investment-counseling firm in New York City, in 1959. Jack married Elizabeth Baker from White Sulphur Springs WV, in 1962. The following year, he took a position with Girard Bank in Philadelphia as a Portfolio Manager. In 1979, he joined the Glenmede Trust Company as Chief Investment Officer, retiring in 1997 with the title of Executive Vice President. In 1998, he joined Girard Partners as Chief Investment Officer.
Jack married Joanna Day of Hershey's Mill PA, in 2005. He was past President and member of the Philadelphia Charity Ball, past President of the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, board member for the Associated Services for the Blind, past Secretary and member of the Merion Cricket Club, and a past Commodore and member of the Yacht Club of Stone Harbor. In his spare time he enjoyed singing with many different groups: The Savoy Company, of Philadelphia, The Now Time Singers, of Bucks County, The Counterparts, in Pennsylvania and more recently, the Hershey's Mill Singers. Relatives and friends are invited to his Memorial Service being held at 2 P.M., Friday, April 21, 2006 the Church family family will receive guests after 1:30 P.M. at St. David's Episcopal Church, 763 South Valley Forge Road, Wayne PA 19087. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the following charities, which he held close to his heart, The Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children, PO Box 338, Avalon, NJ 08202-0338; Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, 8480 Hagy's Mill Road, Phila. PA 19128. Arrangements are being handled by THE DONOHUE FUNERAL HOME, Westtown-West Chester PA, 610-431-9000.
