I was very sad to learn that John had passed away. My favorite person in RCHS basketball and always a great inspiration to me. His infectious laugh always permeated a room. My condolences are with you and your family at this difficult time. He touched so many people in such a great way!

John always gave everything he had without reservation to the people and things he believed in.I saw this first hand when we played football on the '58 team at Roman. There never was any athelete at Roman who overachieved more than John as a player and a teammate. And John was always trying to make the people around him better--his 40 plus years of unselfish dedication to Roman's coaches ,players, students, administrators, and alumni attest to that.At our recent 50 year reunion meeting at the James St. Saloon, the subject of the traditional contribution to the school by these groups came up. A lot of us thought that we would have to set a more modest goal than most classes because we were starting so late.John politely but firmly told us that it was really inappropriate and unacceptable for the class of '59 to set a mediocre target. No one could argue the point, especially to the person who made it. Wishing all the very best memories to Mary and all his family and friends.Larry Costigan

Mrs. Hoban & family,
Our deepest condolences to all of you during your time of sorrow. The loss of "Hob" leaves a void in all of our lives, one that will never be filled by anyone, as he was one in a million. We were honored and priviledged to be able to know him and call him our friend. May you find comfort and solace during your grieving knowing how many of your friends care for all of you. You are in our thoughts and prayers during this time of sadness.

Dear Mary and Family:
On behalf of my Family, I would like to express our sincere regrets on the passing of a great man. To me, John was a wonderful, caring person, something that I do not have to tell you. I will miss the "Hey, Swifty, how you doing" whenever I had the pleasure of being in John's company. And he always asked how my Mother was doing. He was a caring, loving person and the world would be a better place if there were more John Hobans here. Think of all the good times as a remembrance of John. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love and God bless you and the Family.
Matt Swift and Family.

Mrs. Hoban and family, First, my condolences on the loss of your husband and father, John. I played with John on the '59 basketball team. He was truly the glue that held that team together. He was a fine person and I am saddened by his passing. I saw John a few times since leaving RCHS. He never changed. He was a WINNER. He will be sorely missed by all. My prayers are with you and your families at this difficult time. PEACE!

Dear Mrs. Hoban and Family,
My Father just told me today of Mr. Hoban's passing. He has so many fond memories of chatting with Mr. Hoban; Marchiano's bakery on Hermit St, the Henry James saloon and of course, the Roman Catholic HS functions. I will always remember him for being really cool and there was always a good converation to be had whenever I saw him.
Please accept our deepest sympathy and I hope the stories that are written in this book will give you comfort.

Dear Hoban Family
I am most sorry for your loss. As you know, John was one of the best. I was brought to Roman football games by my father and Goldie Grahham was always pointed out to me as well as his assistant, John Hoban and his son, the player, John. Later on in life I was thrilled to meet John through John Miller and Speedy. I always thought John Hoban to be this Thanksgiving Day football superstar and was always thrilled to connect with him as the gentleman that he was. His death is a loss to so many and most especially to you his family. I'll pray for all of you, especially John, one of the Purple and Gold's Finest.

Just want to let the Hoban family know John is being remebered today down here at one of his favorite places...The Palestra. Although I did speak to John at the Prep/LaSalle Championship football game I was happy to see he was happy when Roman won the basketball title here this past winter. I became a big fan of John and his dedication to Roman when I coached the freshman football team there. Although a West Catholic grad myself I considered John not only a 'friendly adversary' but a great fan of the whole Catholic League. The entier Catholic League has lost a true friend. God Bless and Take Care

Our condolonces go out to the Hoban Family and friends. We truly have lost a great person. I was fortunate enough to get to know Mr. Hoban and his family over the years and enjoyed quite a few good times with him. As most people know, "Hobs" love for Roman Catholic High School runs deeper than anybody I have come across. It was rare if you did not see him at a Roman Catholic athletic event. It will be weird not seeing him at a football or basketball game, but I know he will be there in spirit. I know how happy "Hobs" was (this past winter) when the Roman Catholic High School basketball team won the catholic league championship for the first time in 8 years. I was able to celebrate that victory with "Hobs", his family, and many friends at the Henry James saloon. I can remember how happy he was that day ... this was the last time I spoke to him and it will be a lasting memory. "Hobs" may be gone , but you can rest assured he will never forgotten.
