Tribute on the 62

GySgt Villaverde

July 27, 2014

He was a great man, a mentor, a leader, and most of all a great friend. No matter who he met or how long he talked to them he made an impression that no one ever forgot. Whether it was stories about home, Vietnam, Desert Storm, or just one of his conversations to mentor and guide he was always looking out for the Marines below him. Today I took some time to pay tribute on this 7th anniversary of his passing to clean up his memorial site on Hwy 62 and hang some flags in the same fashion he had on his bike. MGuns you'll never be forgotten.

In Memory of MGySgt Nicholas Formosa. 7 years ago today, we lost one of our Marines. May he forever rest in peace. We will never forget you.

July 18, 2014

Almost 7 years ago, MGySgt Formosa left this world to be with his heavenly father. 7 years ago, he left us with words and actions unspoken. Today, I feel that in my heart, he knows what we want to tell him, what we want him to know, and how we felt since he left us. These words right now are not for him, but the people he left behind. Although he is gone, I can see from the messages left behind that he has touched not only us, but our actions as well. We have become better people, not only to ourselves, but to others as well. It is for others that we strive to become better people. It is for others that we do all we can to take better care of others, for we never know when our time on earth is up. We will always remember MGySgt Formosa and others who have gone before us. We will never forget. Please take care of one another. We only have each other.

To the Nicholas Formosa family. My name is Clinton Heinzen,
I went through boot camp at Parris Island with Nick the summer of 1970. He was an amazingly talented young Marine. When we did our three mile runs in full gear he would sing the cadence and we would repeat after him. He would also play taps every evening.
Today I was going through a box of high school and marine corps albums and saw his picture three spaces from my photo. I was curious about Nick and thought I would Google him. I was heart broken when I read about his accident. Nick Thank you for you service, Clinton Heinzen fellow Marine Corps Recruit, Parris Island South Carolina Platoon 365.

This is a belated remembrance of Master Sgt Formosa. I met him at Ft. Custer in Battle Creek Michigan at one of the Marine reunions. He is indeed a great Marine and remembered with honor by by son who served with him in Iraq. He made a huge difference and helped to save lives of Marines during battle.

Dear Mrs. Formosa, Nick and I played trumpet in the USMC Quantico Band in 71-72....He was a very good trumpeter and nice guy! He was always neat as a pin and would try to help everyone....I left to go to Okinawa in 72' and simply didn't keep up with the fellow Marines that I left behind. I had been thinking about Nick over the years and googled him only to discover the sad news. However, the rest of the story is Wonderful...Great Family, fine Career, and A LOT of FRIENDS....What a nice legacy! I am sending a picture of Nick, Me, and CPL Reader playing an old trio, "BRIGHT EYES"....We were in an old auditorium somewhere in Virgina in the fall of 1971....I have some great memories of Nick. God bless You, Family, and Friends! Mickey Owens

February 6, 2010

Dear Mrs. Formosa (Chris),

Sadly, this expression of sorrow is several years late, but please accept my condolences for your husband, Nick (Nicky) Formosa. I first made his acquaintance when I was a capricious freshman @ Bishop Neumann High School in the fall of 1967, when we both participated in the Neumann Players theatrical productions (he as a lauded member of the brass section of a justifiably heralded Neumann band/orchestra, and I as an ill-fated, yet aspiring thespian). Nick amicably guided me during the first two years of my trek through the halls of Bishop Neumann, while he cheerfully offered me rapport, consolation and wisdom. He was neither brash nor cavalier, but he was appropriately confident, affable, and the consummate companion, who would encourage rather than dissuade. Unfortunately, my contact with him in these intervening years was limited, but upon moments of nostalgic reflection, his sentiment is an enduring reminder that there are people on this planet who are an unassailable influence to others; Nick certainly was a positive impression to me. I mourn his inauspicious passing, and I grieve your loss.

Sincerely,

Robert Terleski

Dear Chris and Family,

Nicky and I first met in High School at Bishop Neumann. We were both in the Wind Ensemble during the same time. He was admired for his beautiful sound and wonderful technique as Principal Trumpet player. Most importantly he was always a fine person and a wonderful gentleman.

You, Nicky, and your family are in my daily prayers.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let Perpetual Light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

So, I was wondering one day last February about what happened to Nick. We were friends a long time ago, and I saw that Alexa posted here when I did a google search. I then proceeded to find numerous videos/articles about Nick's life as folks he touched along the way continue to be affected. The good news, you've all shared him with one another. Thank you. ~Another angel in heaven guiding all of us.

Dear PRINCE CHARMING,
I'm back and well i've got a whole lot to say. i miss you more than ever, days come and go when i just sit and cry because i miss you to much for words to describe. today's one of those days and well i just can't believe it. you know they say life goes on but i think mommy dante and your family of marines would second me on saying its really hard to when your not here. Christmas just passed and i'll tell you that on christmas eve it really hurt that i didn't see you like i usually did. 1 year 6 months it feels like forever. i think about you all the time. Dante wants to walk your footsteps but i have no clue what i would do if i lost him too. my life is hard enough for friends to say oh well my dad's taking me to dinner or helping me with my homework just like you did. but now i just think in the back of my mind how great it would be if i saw you again. it wood be more than words can describe. i miss so much and i am so sorry you won't get a chance to meet my love but i promise he'll treat me just like you did. oh and dad even though millions of tears are coming down my face as i say this no one will ever be good enough to replace you. i love you and miss you always .

Nick. God knows that I have tons to say to you. This book won't be able to hold it all. I know everyone, those who have written in this book and those who haven't, have tons to say. So, I shall say this. It's the 29th of July 2008. 12:10 am. I think about you every day. I definitely thought about you on the 27th. I was going to sign in this book, but I was too sad. Right now, I feel it's time to write what I want to tell you about. Though it's not everything, but eventually it will be. Either in writing or letting you know from my soul.
I'm not crying when I'm writing. Tears are not flowing from my eyes when I'm writing. My eyes are not watering from tears. Not because they were not on my face. They are. They are just well hidden until I feel again. I have tried hard to push the tears away, but they always come back again. I try so hard to be a Marine. The one you taught me to be. But once again, I fail. I fail because I have tears in my eyes. Tears in my heart. Tears that hurt when they roll down my cheeks. But I know one day, we will see the ones we love again. So those tears do not need to fall again.
God Bless you Nick. God Bless.

To the Formosa family,

Master Guns Formosa was the greatest Marine that I have ever had the honor of meeting. His down to earth attitude made it easy for me when I was a young Marine and other young Marines to learn from. And we not only learned how to become better Marines, but better people. It did not matter if he knew you all your life or just met you he treated you with respect and like he did know you all your life.
I was deeply saddend by the news of Master Guns death. Even though I only knew him for a short while, I learned a lot from him, and lost someone very influencial in my life. My deepest heart felt sympathies go out to the Formosa family and to SSGT. Villaverde who always has a great story to tell about his friend.

Master Guns,

I know you didn't know me all that well, more so through Villaverde I guess, but that doesn't mean that you didn't make a difference in my life. You were the lead instructor for the Corporals course that I attended in Michigan. You not only taught me how to be an NCO, but you also threw in a lot of life lessons that still ring in my ear. I pray my wife and I still have the love for one-another that you have with “momma” (as you always called her).

Thanks for being a role model and a Marine that many can strive to be like. We love you Top!

I know I just posted an entry, but I was thinking about Nick again today and I thought of one more thing he said to me. The night of the invasion in 2003 I was scared and terrified of the unknown. Artillery was pounding, missiles were launching and the only light I could see came from cannon flashes in front of us and the Gunny's cigerette. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, "Kid, you got nothing to worry about. The battle field is the holiest place on earth. You will never stand any closer to the hand of God then right now. If you got any closer you'd be dead. And right now he's picking and choosing. All you got to do is put your hand in my back pocket and you'll be home before you know it." I don't know how much sense any of that makes to you, but it made sense to me. I will always be grateful for the care and compassion Master Gunnery Sergeant Formosa showed his Marines. He truly personified our motto, Semper Fidelis.

Dear Formosa family,
I had the priviledge and honor of serving under, then "Gunny" Formosa in Iraq during 2003. Nick Formosa was one of the finest Marines and human beings I have ever met. I remember there was something calming about his presence. He could always disarm a stressful situation with a kind word, a joke, or a story about mama(his wife)or Philly(according to Nick, the greatest city in the US). It was always my intention to come visit him and see this city and family he talked so much about. But, some how I just got busy with life. I think I will always regret not making the time. To his wife and son, thank-you for sharing your husband and father with a bunch of salty leathernecks. We will not forget what a tremendous man Nick Formosa was. In closing I want to share my favorite quote from Nick. "Gather round, gather round let's have us a talk. Oh, and the smokin' lamps lit cause the Gunny smokes." God Bless You Master Guns

To the Formosa Family, my deepest sympathy goes out to you and your family. I didn't have the pleasure of meeting him but just reading about him and being a military man myself retired from the US ARMY I knew in my heart what he stood for. Unless you walked in his shoes anyone not being in the military and stationed away from home from loved ones and friends to serve your country and even to give your life it's something one can't imagine. I didn't know Nick at all. I read about his passing in the paper. I was saddened that it was so close to home, as I also live in South Philly. Two years ago I looked at a house for sale on that same block, and I met a few of the neighbors. I remember one of them and he told me a marine lives in that house across the way. It was obvious as the pride just beamed off of the flag waving outside. I just had to express my sincerest condolences to this family. My prayers and thoughts are with you. I know you don't know me but I needed to let you know that even strangers admire people who can be a marine and a family man right here in our own backyard. God Bless Nick, and God Bless you his family. Thank you to all of you for his service as we all know freedom isn't free. God Bless you all in this time of sorrow.

I am very distressed to hear about Nick. Although I had not seen Nick since we played together in our band, The Travelers, I will never forget the great times we shared and the enjoyment I had being his friend for those few short years. Knowing Nick before he was a marine, based on how excellent a trumpet player he was, I'm sure he was a great marine as others have acknowledged. To the Formosa family,
My name is Karen Rector and I had the honor and priviledge to get to know Master Guns over the past year and a half. I'll never forget the first time we met and his astonishment that I was a Chaplain, his Chaplain. In all his years in the Corps I was his first female Chaps. I gained points by also being a motorcycle rider, more points for having the same bike as he did. We had many wonderful conversations, and if you know Master Guns those talks weren't short. I also had the honor of taking part in the ride to LAX on Nick's final leg home to Philly. We will probably meet at Nick's memorial here in 29 Palms. I truly regret that this will be the circumstance for which we will meet. My thoughts and prayers to you and your family. I hope there is some comfort for you in the fact that there are literally thousands of Marines, Sailors, and Civilians here that will ensure his memory will live on in us and hopefully his legacy through us.

I just heard the terrible news on tv.
I remember Nicky from Bishop Neumann HS . I was in the marching band with him and I remember he was a pretty good horn player.
God Bless you all in this time of need, and God Bless Nicky too.

Please I am asking that you do not cry, for I only went home to meet Jesus in the sky. I have a mansion, a crown, and a beautiful white robe, and what a glory it is to walk on streets paved of gold. Now to my wife, children, family & friends, I must say that, I have fought a good fight and I have kept the faith, and with the help of the Lord I was able to win the race. Now when times get hard and you can't see your way, you just fall on your knees and began to pray; if you listen with your heart and not with your ear you will hear a still small voice say I am still here. I was born to live here for as long as I did. The Lord said, Come, for it is now time for you to go, come go with me and receive your reward on high, in that big city called Heaven up in the sky. Again I am asking that you do not cry, because like I said I have only went home to meet Jesus in the sky. The day I went home was like a dream come true, because there is nothing like a sky nicely shaded blue. So If You Shed A Tear, please let it be of joy, because now I can see once again all my other loved ones that also has been lost.

~May the road rise to meet you
~May the wind be always at your back.
~May the sun shine warm upon your face.
~May the rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again .....
~May God hold you in the hollow of His hand~

NO WORDS CAN EXPRESS THE PAIN. THIS POEM WAS SENT TO MY FAMILY WHEN MY BROTHER,52 PASSED ON JULY 4TH THIS YEAR. ALSO A MARINE SEMPER FI
HOPE IF COMFORTS YOU A LITTLE.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say... but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay. I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above. Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love. Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight. Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night. That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through, God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you." It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone. As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on. I need you here badly; you're part of my plan. There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man." God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do. And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you. And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight. God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night. When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears. But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain. Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain. I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned. But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand. But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er. I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before. There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb; but together we can do it by taking one day at a time. It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too... that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you. If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain, then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain." And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile, knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile. So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low, just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go. When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind; I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind. And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free, remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me. Ruth Ann Mahaffey (author) ©Copyright 1998-2006

Mrs. Formosa and Family,
It is with great sadness that we hear of your husbands untimely passing. I met Nick at the motorcycle shop in Battle Creek Michigan where he bought his V-Star. Nick was a great man and always put a smile on our faces every time he came into the shop for anything. We all enjoyed his company and stories, and looked forward to him "stopping by". We have put a note up on the shop sign "God Bless Nick Formosa". We mourn with you, and can feel only a small portion of the pain you must be going though. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Mamma & Nick, I wanted to offer my deepest sympathy to you, and your family.
MGySgt Formosa was one of the greatest men I have ever met. He also had a special quality about him as a marine. I really can‘t explain it. He spoke to everyone the same, weather you were a major, or a lance corporal. Everyone got the same treatment. He took care of low ranks, he made time to talk to us and make sure we were ok. They say ,that in the marine corps, the more rank you pick up, the dumber you get. It isn’t that they become dumber, they start to care more about rank, then marines, and in the mean time they loose focus on the troops. MGySgt Formosa never lost that, he always put us first, and he didn’t care who he pissed off ! He use to refer to the marines I had in the back of my truck, as precious cargo. This is a very sad time to let someone like him go. I thank god I had the privilege to know him, and the honor the call him my friend.
Love always,
Hess
