John Dugan Obituary

John F. Dugan
May 28, 1944 - April 12, 2021
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - John F. Dugan (1944-2021) passed away in his home at Hilton Head Island, SC on April 12, 2021 at the age of 76. John is survived by his wife Jane Hoffman Dugan, children Christine (Young), John (Erin) and Skylar, stepdaughter Jessica, 3 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. John is also survived by his brother Thomas P. Dugan (Mary Jane) and sister Judith Grace Wohlgemuth (Robert) along with nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.
John, the son of Norbert P. And Dorothy M. Dugan, was born May 28, 1944 in Glen Ridge, NJ. After graduation from Glen Ridge High School in 1962 and later the University of South Carolina and Montclair State University, John served for more than 20 years in the United States Air Force, at many world-wide locations including Vietnam, Thailand, the Pentagon, the United Kingdom, and Andrews Air Force Base, MD, where he was assigned to the 89th Military Airlift Wing, concluding his service to our country by transporting high-ranking elected and appointed US Government officials, up to and including George H.W. Bush, then the Vice President of the United States. However, John often said that his favorite Air Force assignment was as an ROTC instructor at Auburn University, where he served as a mentor and teacher to future Air Force leaders.
Upon retiring from the Air Force in 1988, John relocated to Hilton Head Island, SC, where he began a second career in real estate, concluding with his association at Charter One Real Estate. It seemed that every client ended up a friend. He enjoyed years of great golf, fantastic weather, fancy sports cars, his many friends, and most importantly, his time with wife Jane and daughter Skylar.
John will always be remembered for his booming tee shots, his lousy putts, a so-so short game, his laughter, humility, and his honesty and integrity. He was a man's man, whose word was his bond. If you were John's friend, you knew you were his friend for life. He will truly be missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 7 at 10 am at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, Hilton Head Island, SC. His cremated remains will be interred at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
Flowers and cards are welcome. It is also John's wish that any contributions be sent in his memory to the American Cancer Society and Crescent Hospice, Hilton Head Island, SC.

I met John over 30 years ago when visiting Hilton Head with my family. We were immediately made to feel very welcome. Over the following years we visited Hilton Head many times with friends from England and I remember some wonderful games of golf. Our version of the Ryder Cup!
Our condolences to Jane and family. John will be greatly missed.

I grew up in Bergen County, NJ at the same time as John. When my wife and I visited HHI in the late 1990’s we met with John who became our realtor for 5 transactions prior to and after our retirement here. We immediately shared recollections of the sites and customs of our common background including a stint in the military after college. John was always friendly, knowledgeable, and fun to be with.
Condolences to Jane and family on his passing.

I worked as a week end receptionist at Schremba Realty on Hilton Head in 1989-90 and John was a real estate agent there. He was such an awesome person. It's been over 30 years and I still remember him. I was so saddened to hear of his passing. Can't say enough good things about him. I send my condolences to the family.

I want to add that John and I were art class partners in H.S. It was a mandatory class so the football team had to take it. What a scene. Dugan and the scissors plus whatever we were supposed to do! At a 25 yr HS reunion besides our discussion about George Bush Sr. he revealed to me that the Art Class was one of his favorites. He also admired our teacher who had a career outside of school in design. I should mention as well that his football coach was revered for his high standards and moral compass. A while girls didn't play football I know that may of the boys found a father figure in Bill Horey. Below is the Candy Cane Ball. Girls asked boys. John and Karen won in a highly contested race against me (Sue Miller & Joe Swayze)

Members of Our Glen Ridge High School Class of 62 has a Zoom meeting every so often. Yesterday we remembered John by telling stories. Dugan or "Hillary" to us, was such a good guy. Solid, kind, a team player. What he achieved as time went by is admirable.

John, aka Dug,
For the last 10 years or so we have shared many breakfasts and conversations together. I will remember and cherish the political torts and humorous banter as well as our compassionate insights into each other’s lives. You were truly a great friend and I will miss you.

John was one of my many older cousins, but we always had a connection. He went to Vietnam Nam and I wrote him many letters while he was there. I’m sure as a teenager I just wrote about friends And boys but he said he and his troop enjoyed them. I was so excited when he safely returned and remember listening to his many stories. I admired him for his service and what he sacrificed by fighting in that war. I continued to write him letters and always at Christmas and looked forward to seeing him again at Hilton Head. Unfortunately I did not make it there, but I will always remember him as a kind person and will miss seeing him again. Love Mary Ann Matey (Moore)

John was my first cousin. He was 5 years older than me and in the stream of THE PATSON cousins we went out diverse and productive ways. His mom Dorothy and my mom Erma we’re sisters. Unfortunately life gets in the way. And loss brings you back. My sincere thoughts with John’s family and my Dugan cousins. Helen (Magnussen) &Barry Hucker
