Matthias Dietel Obituary

Matthias Dietel, 75
1948 - 2023
Lynn - Our family sadly has lost a larger than life husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Matthias (Matthew) Dietel passed away on Thursday, September 28 after a battle with MDS, bone marrow disease.
Matthew, as he was fondly known, was born in Erfurt, Germany and was the son of Heinz and Kriemhild Dietel of Erfurt, Germany. He graduated from Dusseldorf University with a degree in engineering in 1969 and married his first wife, Monika before moving to the United States in 1970.
Once in America, he resided in Marblehead MA and worked for various engineering companies, although his true passion was always art. Growing up, art had a major impact on his life as his father was a renown art collector himself. He built a close network of friends through his love of art. He had a special affinity for the Museum of Fine Art Boston and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Ma and was a Patron of both Institutions.
In 1982 he welcomed his cherished daughter Christina who he loved dearly. He then met his current wife, Patricias (Patty) Scangas in 1998. They later married in 2005 and resided in Lynn, Ma.
He became an adored member of the entire Scangas and Pappathanasi Family. His big laugh, his witty sense of humor, his exuberant persona, and his warm heart brought everyone together and formed everlasting cherished memories. Matthew was known to love a great party. As a consummate storyteller, he adored celebrations, champagne flowing, fine cigars, and interesting company. He developed many close friendships through music and the arts, including classical symphonies and concerts in Europe. Patty and Matthew enjoyed traveling the wold and living life to its fullest. He will be sorely missed.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia, his daughter, Christina Monley, husband, Cy Monley and grandchildren, Colton and Romee Monley. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Pamela Scangas, husband Greg Desses, brother-in-laws Christopher Scangas, wife Cyndi Scangas and sister-in-law, Trudy Scangas as well brother-in-law Arthur Scangas and husband, Walter Shepard and many nieces and nephews. He is survived also by half-sister, Helen Luther and husband Frank Luther and their daughters, Bianca Lachmann and Ella Wer. He is predeceased by dear brother-in-law Nicholas Scangas.
