I worked with Jay for most of his 33 years at Hallmark. He was a great leader. Jay built Hallmark's Research area into a world class operation and staffed it with exceptional talent. He was wicked smart and could take complicated algorithms and turn them into understandable, usable data. When Jay spoke, everyone listened. And yet, he never took credit for himself. I don't believe I ever heard him use the word "I" when associated with projects or corporate successes. He was a fierce advocate for his talented staff and gave them credit whenever possible. Jay was known as an exceptional soccer coach, but even more, he was a gifted life coach for many of us. I'd like to believe that Jay's presence will always be with us and that he'll continue to coach us, not from the sidelines, but from the best seat in the house.
