Lexington, Kentucky - George William Mills, 83, husband of Elizabeth Evans Mills (Betty), died peacefully on September 20 in Lexington, Kentucky. Born on June 30, 1939, in Greenville, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Blanche (Kimmel) and George R. Mills.
He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he served as Treasurer for Phi Gamma Delta, and the UK School of Law, where he served as an Editor on the Kentucky Law Journal. Mr. Mills was selected by his law school peers for the Professionalism Award. After law school, he served as a law clerk for Judge Bernard T. Moynahan, Jr., U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Kentucky.
Mr. Mills practiced law with Stites & Harbison (formerly Harbison, Kessinger, Lisle & Bush) from 1966 until his retirement in 2004, where he played a major role in the Toyota plant land acquisition in Scott County. He presided over the real estate closing for the Calumet Farm bankruptcy auction, paving the way for the farm's preservation. He developed an expertise in condemnation law and represented the Louisville Airport Improvement Project.
He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and the Lexington Country Club where he enjoyed countless rounds of golf with friends. He was passionate about politics, serving as the chairman of the Fayette County Democratic Party. He loved nothing better than organizing political campaigns.
He was preceded in death by his son George Patrick Mills, his brother Robert Mills, and his sister Jo Ann Kington. He is survived by his son Matthew Mills, his daughter-in-law Frederique Rolland-Mills, and his grandchildren Eva and Samuel (all of Savannah, Georgia). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
George Mills loved to read, and for that reason, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lexington Public Library.
A gathering in his memory will be held at a later date.

RIP my old friend at UK from those decades gone by. It was an honor to serve with you on the Cabinet of the Fraternity and it´s always been a honor to say I knew you.
