JOSEPH KERLEY Obituary

KERLEY, JOSEPH EDDIE - age 88.5, passed away April 26, 2013 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville, Tennessee. Joe was a lifelong resident of South Knoxville except for the period of time of his military service during World War II. He retired from TVA as General Auditor in the Office of Inspector General in November, 1990 after 37 years. He was a member of Greystone Presbyterian Church in South Knoxville. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed being outdoors and fishing. He was in the 71st Seabee Battalion in WWII serving during the battles of Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Admiralty Islands, Okinawa, and was preparing for the invasion of Japan when the war ended. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marjorie N. Kerley; daughters Janet K. East and husband Bill, and Teri K. Rowles; three grandchildren, Ben J. East and Tonya, Shaun M. Rowles and Jennifer, and Kara (Jill) Remington and James; eight great-grandchildren: Oliver and Max East, Landon, Sophie, Hudson, and Audrey Rowles, and Penny and Archer Remington. He was preceded in death by his parents, W.W. Kerley, Sr. and Georgia Mae Clinton Kerley and brothers, Leon Kerley, W.W. (Bill) Kerley, Jr., and Charles A. Kerley. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 29, 2013 at Greystone Presbyterian Church from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM with the funeral service to follow at 8:00 PM with Rev. Ann Brunger officiating. Family and friends will meet at Berry Funeral Home on Tuesday April 30, 2013 at 10:30 AM to go in procession to Woodlawn Cemetery for an 11:00 AM interment service. Memorials may be made to Greystone Presbyterian Church, 139 Woodlawn Pike, Knoxville, TN 37920. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway. I had the pleasure of meeting Joe through my father-in-law, Buddy Allen, at
TVA. Joe was absolutely one of the finest, most courteous, unassuming men.
Joe is in Heaven, and I hope to see him there as Christ has promised us.

My deepest condolences. Joe was the Senior Manager to whom my work group reported at TVA when I was hired in 1976. I will always remember him as a great leader and a man of utmost integrity. He was a genuine assest in his professional life at TVA and always the same down to earth and friendly Joe everytime our paths. I hope you find comfort in knowing he touched many lives in such a positive manner in so many ways. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Margie: Hearing about Joe's death makes me very sad. Although we have lost touch in recent years, I still have fond memories of you and Joe during the time we lived in Knoxville. Joe was a gentleman, a friend and a valued co-worker. Good Luck! You and your family will be in my prayers.

Joe Kerley was a fine man and friend to many. His 37 years at TVA were devoted to helping maintain the financial integrity of TVA, and to ensuring that the ratepayers of the Tennessee Valley received fair value for their money. We extend our condolences to his devoted wife, Margie, and to his beloved daughters, Janet and Teri and their families, during this most difficult of times.

Uncle Eddie was my favorite man in the whole world next to my Daddy. I respected him and learned so much from him. There are so many things to say about him, but yet they seem so trivial. He had that way of making up silly little songs, always knew how to make you feel at ease. And then there was the side that could ask you more questions in 5 minutes and get answers even if you didn't say anything!! He showed respect to everyone around him and in return was very well respected. I have seen him play tirelessly with his young grandchildren as if he never had anything else he'd rather do. He could show so much empathy, like when I would have gall bladder attacks and be at his house, he was always trying to help me to feel better in whatever way he could. He was such a good partner to my Aunt Margie and they had a very loving unique relationship. He will be greatly missed upon this earth, but I know he has found his place in heaven beside Jesus!
