Allegra Brooks Obituary

Allegra Brooks passed away on March 12, 2015 at the age of 98. She was born on July 31, 1916, in New York City and moved to Glendale with her family when she was a young girl. If ever there was a person who was aptly named, it was Allegra; she brought joy and happiness wherever she went. Widowed in July of 1971 upon the passing of her late husband, Philip Zachary Brooks, she devoted the rest of her life to her family and to helping others. An avid reader, she learned Braille so that she could transcribe books for the blind. She loved classical music and especially opera. She was fiercely independent; she lived in her house until the very end. She had a great sense of adventure, whether it was climbing a rope ladder at Mesa Verde when she was well into her seventies, or in taking trips to Israel, Greece, Russia and China. But her greatest joy in life was spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and with the Levy family. Known first as "Grandma" and then as "Grams," she not only taught us how to make Sephardic dishes and to play Rummy Q, but she also showed all of us how to live and how to care for one another. She used to say, "Remember the good times," and now we remember all of the good times that we shared with her. She is survived by her three children, her five grandchildren, and her five great-grandchildren. In loving memory: Dean Brooks; Alan and Rosecarrie Brooks; Marcia and Jeff Lloyd; Zach Lloyd; Kim, Anthony, Lloyd and Jullian Todaro; Stephanie, Elliott, Henry, Jacob and Phoebe Brill; Lisa Brooks; Alexis Brooks and Brendan Fitzpatrick. Donations may be made in her memory to the Braille Institute, the American Cancer Society or the Anti-Defamation League. Services are Sunday March 15, 2015 at 3:00PM. I only got to meet her once (At Spencer Ley's bar mitzvah). What a shame. She was as impressive as heralded. A lovely, strong woman. A blessed life with a wonderful family. I know how much she will be missed.
