Angelo Alaoglu Obituary

Angelo William Alaoglu, age 65, born Washington, D.C., May 20, 1948, departed this life April 21, 2014, in Northridge, CA, of heart disease, a "Valley Boy" and longtime resident of Encino. Beloved and devoted son and caregiver of his mother Cleo, age 99; beloved brother of sisters Ann Alaoglu, M.D., of Washington, D.C., and Elaine Alaoglu, of Encino, CA. He was predeceased by his father, mathematician Leonidas Alaoglu, in 1981 and became the patrarch and bulwark of his family. A National Merit Scholar, he attended U.C. Berkeley and U.C.S.D. He worked on his college newspaper and was a gifted writer and editor. He worked in Information Technology for Cal-Fed S&L, Burroughs, Unisys, the L.A. Olympic Committee, the L.A. World Cup Committe and was a founder of En-Linea On-Line Services Corp. in Santa Monica, which developed and ran the website of FIFA. He retired young and devoted his energies to the care of his mother and volunteer work at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Northridge. A lifelong member of the parish, he served as an altar boy and was eventually the Parish Council President for many years, and also co-chaired their reknowned Greek Festival. He was charitable, giving freely to his church, the Democratic Party, the Sierra Club, various museums and was one of a very few male members of the League of Women Voters. A kind, fair and gentle soul he had a deep sense of justice and was loyal and generous to all. He had far-ranging interests and an encyclopedic memory. He was a talented chef and baker. He was an avid and constant reader. He loved nature, Yosemite, sailing, skiing, baseball, movies, art, cartoons, history, science, economics, mysteries. He loved and enjoyed his dog and cat companions through the years. Deeply insightful, he freely offered his emotional support and encouragement and presented you with a considerate and practical solution to your dilemmas. He was a steadying and constant presence in all our lives. He leaves behind numerous Leonidas and Barootes cousins across Canada and Seattle, Washington, countless friends -- particularly Charlotte and Peter Mc Carty and their sons -- and, of course, his St. Nicholas family. He will be missed by all. Trisagion Service, Thursday, April 24, 7 p.m. Funeral, Friday, April 25, 11 a.m., St. Ncholas Greek Orthodox Church, Northridge, CA. If you wish, donations may be made in his memory to the St. Nicholas Church, Northridge, CA, where he devoted so much of his time and energy.
