Cormac MURPHY Obituary

MURPHY, Brother Cormac, FSC (Noel Francis Murphy) was born in San Francisco, CA on November 7, 1915 to John Murphy and Nellie O'Hara Murphy. He was a member of the De La Salle Christian Brothers for seventy-five years and died at Napa, CA on April 26 at the age of 94. Brother Cormac's older brother John T. Murphy predeceased him. He graduated from St. Ignatius High School in San Francisco in 1934 and attended the University of San Francisco for one year. He entered the De La Salle Christian Brothers on July 11, 1935 and received the religious habit on September 15.
He graduated from St. Mary's College, Moraga in 1939 and made his final vows on June 29, 1941. During his career Brother Cormac served as a teacher, librarian and prefect at Sacred Heart and St. Peter's High Schools, San Francisco; Christian Brothers High School, Sacramento; St. Mary's College High School, Berkeley; Cathedral High School, Los Angeles, La Salle High School, Pasadena; St. Mary's College, Moraga; and St. Mary's Residence School, Napa. He was twice a member of the Novitiate staff. He retired to the Holy Family Community in Napa in 1986. Brother Cormac received master's degrees in library science from USC in 1956 and in music from Holy Names College in 1972. He received a Ph.D. in nutrition from Donsbach University in 1983. Brother Cormac is survived by his nieces Jean Gallagher and her husband John of Brisbane, CA; Jan Murphy of Idyllwild, CA and his nephew Robert T. Murphy of Melbourne, Australia. Funeral services will be at Mont La Salle, Napa, CA on Monday, May 3 at 10:00 a.m. Viewing will precede the funeral Mass at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Mont La Salle cemetery. I have fond memories of Brother Cormac teaching history at St. Peter's in 1952-53 to me as a sixth grader. It is sad that we didn't make contact until now.
