Howard H. Stone

1923 - 2016

December 14, 1923 - April 21, 2016 OPHTHALMOLOGIST and WORLD TRAVELER Dr. Stone was born in Frankfurt/Germany in 1923. In 1932 he emigrated with his family to Palestine where he was an avid chess and soccer player. He volunteered to the British 8th Army during World War II where he served for five years with the last two years in the Jewish Brigade. He saw action in the Italian Campaign and had an audience with Pope Pius XII. During his Residency training, Dr. Stone performed clinical and laboratory research in glaucoma and diabetes. He was awarded a special Medal for the Most Original Research Study at John Hopkins Hospital in 1958. He published over two dozen professional scientific papers. In 1968 he received a Ford Foundation Grant for Field Studies in Kenya, Uganda, the Fiji Islands, and Ethiopia under the auspices of the World Health Organization. Dr. Stone was Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at UCLA Medical Center where he also served on the Human Subjects Protection Committee. He visited over 70 countries, on four different continents, and worked in a dozen of them. He lectured on diabetes, glaucoma and retinal surgery in Sweden, Ethiopia, Israel and at medical centers throughout the United States. In 1950 he married Barbara Bein. They had four children. In 1958 he started his private practice in Beverly Hills. Many of his patients became lifelong friends. In the 1980's, following his retirement, he continued to travel and play chess. He was an avid reader, biker, hiker, and above all, tennis player, for several decades. Dr. Stone is survived by his daughter, Andrea, sons David, Dan, and William and his grandsons Matthew, TJ, Parker, Conner, and Luke. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 22nd, at 1PM at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on 6000 Santa Monica Blvd.
