Irvin ALTMAN Obituary

ALTMAN, Irvin Harold Irvin Harold (Hal) Altman, 89, passed away August 16, 2011 at his home in Mission Viejo, CA. He was born in Philadelphia, the son of Isidore and Ethel (Spector) Altman. Hal served as a teacher, learner and leader with the Los Angeles Unified School District for 38 years. He developed model schools and was widely respected for his vision, organization and accomplishments in every school he led. He served as principal at several elementary schools until his retirement in 1984. While working full time, he went back to graduate school and completed his doctorate degree. During this time he also authored a leading book on environmental education. His "second" career as a sculptor revealed his amazing artistic talents and resulted in an impressive array of sculpted models. He continued to learn his new craft, just as he stayed engaged in a full range of travel, social activities among his wide group of friends, and family get-togethers for every birthday, anniversary, and graduation event.
Hal is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Estelle, with whom he recently celebrated his 67th anniversary. They raised a wonderful and supportive family including Steve Altman (Judy), Judy Barnett (Harvey), Ken Altman (Deena), and sister Mae Bragen (Tom). Hal leaves five grandchildren including Melissa Erickson (Todd), Ben Barnett (Sina), Matt Altman (Alex), Logan Altman (Esther), and Mara Altman, He also leaves five great-grandchildren, including Alex and Drew Erickson, Valerie and Fernanda Ortega, and Sadie Altman. The family is very close, and the annual tradition of their anniversary celebrations was always eagerly anticipated and important times of togetherness. Private services were held at Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City. A celebratory Memorial Service is being held Friday, August 19, 2011. Contributions in his honor may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
