Roland Eli Coate Jr.

June 24, 1930 - September 13, 2022 Roland Eli Coate, Jr., passed away on September 13, 2022, in Santa Monica, California at the age of 92. Roland was born in Los Angeles, and attended the Webb School, Occidental College, and Cornell University, from which he received a degree in Architecture. He completed his military service in France in 1956 and returned to New York and then Los Angeles to practice architecture. He received recognition for forward-thinking, sustainable designs, including the Alexander House in Montecito, California. He taught at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) between 1975 and 1988, inspiring and mentoring future architects. In the mid-1980s, Roland turned his energies to painting. From his Venice studio, he was creative and prolific for over 30 years. He was familiar to many on the oceanfront, with whom he shared conversations during the enjoyable daily walks from which he drew inspiration. In addition to art and architecture, Roland's interests ranged from tennis to jazz, the harmonica, psychology, mysticism, and French literature. Roland is survived by his sons Alexander Roland Coate (Stephanie L.) of Lafayette, CA, and Anthony Robinson Coate (Stephanie N.) of Oakland, CA, his sister Susanne Coate Alden (Holt) of Mountain Ranch, CA and his grandchildren Katia, Adam, and Alistair. Roland was predeceased by his brother William Bleecker Coate and his parents Roland Eli Coate, Sr., and Gladys Robinson Coate. No public memorial is planned. Those who knew him are asked to think kind thoughts to send him on his way. He will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.
