Charles "Charlie" Paul Meyer, age 89, of Hayward, passed away at Mayo Hospital - Eau Claire on Thursday, April 5. He was born on April 9, 1934, in Portage, WI to Paul and Mary Meyer (Backhaus). Charles lived most of his life in Elk Mound with cousins, and in Hayward with his immediate family.
Charles had an adventuresome and entrepreneurial spirit, spending his career crisscrossing the country behind the wheel of a semi-truck, carefully transporting families' belongings to their new beginnings. Work wasn't just a necessity; it was a source of pride, passion, and purpose for Charles.
Charles had a heart of gold. Always ready to lend a helping hand, never hesitating to go the extra mile for anyone in need. His playful spirit shone through with his love of rhyming and giving people nicknames, bringing laughter and joy to those around him. A man who loved dogs and babies; their innocence and loyalty resonating deeply with him. In his free time, Charles found solace in gardening - especially enjoying tomato sandwiches, maintaining his property and vehicles, keeping his woods tidy, watching football, and listening to classic country music. Notably, Charles served his country with honor in the Army during the Korean War.
Above all, Charles was a devoted father. Charles cherished his family and held tight to a strong faith in God; and a connection to the Catholic church. Charles held loving memories and relished visiting with his family members and friends - always up for a steaming cup of coffee or a cold brew ... or two.
Charles is survived by his children, Mary (Ben) Schulze of Elk Mound, Michael (Becky) Meyer of West Lakeland, Paul (Katie) Meyer of Columbus; Charles' eight grandsons, Gregory, Daniel, Matthew, Charles, William, Lucas, Quinn, and Mason; brother, Edward Meyer of Mayville, WI; as well as many other family members and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mary Meyer (Backhaus); beloved wife, Mary Meyer (Schumacher); brothers, Alfred and Arthur Meyer; and his sister, Mary Alice Meyer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 11 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elk Mound, WI with Father Timothy Welle officiating.
