Alice Marie (Gallagher) Martin August 8, 1920 Ð May 13, 2005 COLUMBUS, GA — Mrs. Alice M. (Gallagher) Martin, 84, of Columbus, GA died Friday, May 13, 2005 from complications of cancer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today at 10:30 a.m., at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, with her son, Fr. Se‡n Charles Martin, presiding, according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus. Interment will follow at Main Post Cemetery, Ft. Benning, GA. Mrs. Martin was born in Jewell, Kansas on August 8, 1920, the youngest child of J.L. and Catharine Gallagher. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl Francis Martin and her son Kevin Francis Martin. She is survived by her sister Kathryn Eilert of Beloit, KS, son Patrick Michael Martin of Dallas, TX (wife Sylvia, grandchildren Timothy and Michael), daughter Kathleen Sue Marks of Statesville, NC (husband Fred, grandchildren Melissa, Brian and Adam), daughter Maureen Kaye Berenson of Sacramento, CA (husband Scott, grandchildren Kieran and Molly), son Father Se‡n Charles Martin of St. Louis, MO, son Brian Joseph Martin of Atlanta, GA (wife Clare, and grandchildren Brendan, Brighid and Se‡n), son Colin Timothy Martin of Columbus, GA (wife Elizabeth, and grandchildren Mary Catharine and Elizabeth). She died peacefully, surrounded by her children. She was widely admired for her beautiful hats, which she wore on all occasions. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church for forty-three years, and was a librarian at Sayers Memorial Library at Ft. Benning for thirty-five years until her retirement in 1991. After raising her seven children, she earned a Bachelor's degree in History in 1994 and a Master's Degree in Public Administration in 1998, both from Columbus State University. She went on to teach at Tillinghurst Center and remained active until her last days. She was an inspiration to her family and was dearly beloved by all of them.
