Al EAMES Obituary

Published by Contra Costa Times from Jun. 15 to Jun. 17, 2010.
Al Eames 1915 ~ 2010 Former Antioch Resident Al Eames, family man, auto dealer, lover of boats, cars and life, died on June 10 after a short struggle with lung cancer. He is survived by Nina, his devoted wife of 72 years; two sons Gary and Steve, their wives, Donna and Patty, four grand-daughters and five great-grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by his daughter, Carol. Al was born in Oakland in 1915 where he began his working life as an auto mechanic. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he became a trained pilot. He returned from his tour to continue in the auto world. He gradually began purchasing Flying A gas stations until in 1956 he acquired the Ford franchise in Antioch. He owned and operated the Al Eames Ford dealership for 44 years. A warm and gregarious man, Al had many friends in the communities in which he lived. He and his family lived in Berkeley, El Cerrito, Antioch, on the Delta's Georgiana Slough and presently on a ten acre ranch outside Vacaville. Al and his family boated and skied the Delta waterways and Lake Shasta for years. In 1941 Al won the National Stock Car Racing Championship and in 1953 he won the World Water Ski Slalom Championship. He loved sports cars and boats, his motor homes, many table games and the color orange. He will be missed. Memorial gatherings for Al will be private. The family asks that, if friends want to remember Al in a special way, donations in his memory to the Yolo Hospice Society would be appreciated. Friends and family can mail their contribution to Yolo Hospice, PO Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617 or log on to yolohospice.org and click on Charitable Giving for guidance.

My mother worked for Al after our dad died in 1962. He was kind enough to hire her as his bookkeeper/secretary in Antioch. Because of that employment I was able to buy my first car a Ford Mustang from Al Eames Ford. I remember being charged $100.00 over cost for the (special order) light blue-black topped convertible1967 Beauty. Thanks, Al, for caring.

Al Eames launched my career as an auto diesel mechanic. I worked as a lot attendant for him in high school. My brother and I washed cars and cleaned the shop. I worked as a tech for other dealers after that. But,none had the warm personal atmosphere of Al Eames. He will be truly missed.

My sincere condolences to Al's family. I remember Al through my father, Richard (Dick) or (Rick) Bradford, for about 40 years as my father use to fix Al's Ford dealership's Air Conditioner as a good friend when it broke down.......My father has pasted but I know he would be sad to hear of his friends passing as I do. Al would always make sure my dad had the latest Thunderbird...and Al sold me my first used car off of his lot.....he was always so fun to talk to. I always wondered how he was when his dealership was gone and I miss him.

Dear Nina, Steve and Gary,
Had we not been neighbors on Colusa Avenue in El Cerrito, my dad would never have bought a ski boat and we would never have had the joy of skimming over the top of the water on hot summer days. Thanks to Al's enthusiasm and the many times you invited us to join you, we all added another dimension to our lives. Another memory I have is of your ocelots on Georgiana Slough.
My thoughts are with you all during this time of mouring. Take care, Linda Dreyer MacKenzie

My heart goes out to the family. He was a sweet man that I had the pleasure of knowing while I worked at Al Eames Ford. I am sorry for your loss.

Nina & family: My deepest condolences on Al's passing. While many years have passed since seeing you, I remember both of you fondly. Nina, I enjoyed seeing you & Al at the Ford dealership in Dixon last year. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
