Alexander "Alex" Zahed Shamy

November 6, 1989 - June 5, 2024

Alexander "Alex" Zahed Shamy, 34, beloved son, brother and friend, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, in Brooklyn, New York.

Alex was born and raised in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, surrounded by a supporting community of family, friends, coaches and teachers who loved him.

In high school, Alex attended the Roanoke Valley Governor's School for Math and Science and was a proud member of the Patrick Henry High School Men's Soccer Team.

He went on to attend Virginia Tech where he made life-long friends and loved cheering on his Hokies to countless victories. After graduating from Tech, Alex set his sights on New York City, where he laid the foundation for a career in tech.

In his adult years he loved exploring the city, skateboarding, riding his bike to Fort Tilden, walks in Prospect Park, and weekend trips to Maine. He made his home and community of friends in Brooklyn, with his beloved dog Max, who brought him great comfort while he weathered the pandemic and beyond.

Alex was charismatic, interesting and interested in everything and everyone, and his personality loomed even larger than his 6 foot 4 inch frame. His sarcasm and sense of humor were an entertaining cover for what everyone knew was a heart of gold.

Alex died of complications from pneumonia. He is survived by his mother, Jennifer Shamy of Roanoke, Va.; Joe Alisauskas of Roanoke, Va.; his sister, Lillian Shamy of Charlotte, NC; his sister, Corinne Lawson of Charlotte, NC; brother-in-law, Alex Lawson; and adoring nieces, Elliott and Alexandra Lawson. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward T. Shamy Jr.

A Funeral Service will be held at Oakey's Funeral Home, Downtown Roanoke Chapel, 318 Church Avenue, on Friday, June 14, 2024, at 2 p.m. A separate gathering of friends was held in Brooklyn following the funeral in Roanoke. The Alex Shamy Patrick Henry Soccer Memorial Scholarship has been established in his memory, continuing his legacy of service to others.
