Graveside service: 11 a.m. Wednesday in Oakwood Cemetery. Dr. Joey Jeter and Dr. Bryan Feille, former students and friends of Dr. Edens, will officiate.
Dr. Edens was born May 30, 1920, in Corsicana to J. Wesley Edens and Bessie Ambrose Edens. The Edenses also had one other son, Joseph Wesley, who was 14 years older than Ambrose. Dr. Edens commented that his cattleman father favored his older brother and Ambrose was spoiled by his doting mother.
Dr. Edens attended grammar school and high school in Corsicana and then went on to Texas Christian University for his B.S. in economics. Later he attended Vanderbilt University, where he received his Ph.D. in biblical studies. Dr. Edens spent 3 1/2 years in the Air Force during World War II. While on a troop carrier 42 days out of France headed for the Philippine Islands, the Hiroshima bomb was dropped. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Edens was discharged home.
Before retiring, Dr. Edens taught 40 years at TCU. During his tenure with TCU, he traveled extensively for pleasure and for business. A partial list of his travel destinations includes Africa, Egypt, Greece, Italy, France, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Japan, China, the Holy Land and his very favorite, England. Dr. Edens felt a special connection to England, where his niece, Rita Jane Edens, lived for 25 years, not to mention that this was the country of his ancestry. When asked if there was anyone he would enjoy visiting with, his response besides Jesus was King Edward VI, the son of the infamous Henry VIII. Dr. Edens read some of the highly intelligent works and writings of King Edward that were accomplished when he was a mere teenager.
This dear, intelligent, well-traveled individual was truly loved by his students, friends, fellow faculty members and his family. The flag at TCU is flying at half-staff in his honor.
Survivors: Niece, Rita Jane Edens of Corsicana; and great-nieces and husbands, Daphne and David Dowd of Corsicana and Deah and Byron McCoy of Dallas.
