Anna Olmstead Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 17, 2016.
May 30, 1920 - December 6, 2016 Anna Milada (Higman) Olmstead passed away suddenly but peacefully on December 6, 2016. She was born in Charlevoix, MI, on May 30, 1920. She graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1937. During the war, she worked for the local newspaper, the Charlevoix Courier, and at Charlevoix City Hall. She also covered local stories for the AP and UPI news services. Copies of her work have been digitized and stored at the Charlevoix Historical Society. Anna married Miles Franklin Olmstead on August 9, 1950. The two of them had been neighbors and friends since kindergarten. They had three boys, Gary, Jeff, and Clay. In 1958 they moved to California and settled in La Crescenta. In the boys' younger years, she was a stay-at-home mom, cooking amazing desserts, helping the kids with their homework, and inspiring the boys with great books. When the boys were old enough, Anna took the perfect job for a book lover, working at the Glendale Public Library for 17 years, the last 9 of those as head of Circulation. After retirement, Miles and Anne bought a motor home and hit the road. They toured southern California with a like-minded troupe of vagabonds in the Lazy Daze Caravan Club, and visited family and friends all over the country, passing the time talking about all the people they knew from a life spent together. Eventually, they visited 46 of the 48 contiguous states, and all the southern Canadian Provinces. She was pre-deceased by Miles in 2009. She is survived by her three sons, Gary, Jeff, and Clay, by Gary's wife Jane, Clay's wife Maggie, her dearest nieces Anne Puffpaff, of Charlevoix, and Sue Breidenstein, of Boyne City, MI, and many other relatives, mostly in Michigan and Arizona. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Friends of the Glendale Public Library. The donations will be put towards an engraved leaf, acorn, or stone on the Tree of Friends sculpture at the Glendale Central Library.
