Obituary

Anne T. Dunlevy, who lived in Grand Forks from 1949 to1994, died December 22nd in Pasadena, California. She had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1995. She was born on October 15th, 1920 to John and Mary (Zachar) Briestensky in North Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. Anne graduated from her high school as valedictorian and received a scholarship to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. After graduating with a Nursing Degree she was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy Nurse Corps on January 4th, 1944. She served as one of 30 nurses on a Navy hospital ship, the USS Tranquility, in the Western Pacific in 1944 and 1945. One of the tragedies of her military career occurred in 1947. On April 16th of that year a fertilizer ship docked at the port of Texas City, Texas, exploded, causing nearly 600 fatalities and many more injuries. Anne was serving at the Navy hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, and volunteered to go to Texas City and help care for the sick and dying. She was married to Jerome M. Dunlevy of Grand Forks at the San Diego Naval Air Station on April 3rd, 1948. Anne and her husband moved to Grand Forks in 1949 because they knew it would be a good place to raise their family. She encouraged her children to work hard in school and two of the children became doctors and three are lawyers. Surviving are her husband and five children: Patrick, Glendale, California; Dr. Maureen (Edward) Fleming, Omaha, Nebraska; Shawn (Cindy), Duluth, Minnesota; Kevin (Marni), Shoreview, Minnesota; and Dr. Daniel, Sacramento, California, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and her sister, Antoinette Severin. Her parents, three brothers, and four sisters preceded her in death. Anne had a strong Catholic faith and an avid interest in music, cooking and gardening. She enjoyed travel, painting at Park Board art classes, entertaining, and volunteering for the St. Michael's Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed success in almost everything she did, except for learning to water-ski at Maple Lake. In Pasadena, she was the first person enrolled in a new Alzheimer's research program. Services will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Grand Forks at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4th, 2006. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery of Grand Forks in the spring of 2006. Memorials may be given to HMRI Molecular Neurology, 99 North El Molino Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91101 or to Holy Family Church in Grand Forks. Arrangements are with Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks, ND. www.amundsonfuneralhome.com

Jerry, Steve and I were so sorry to hear about Anne. We enjoyed a number of visits with the 2 of you at Tom & Jini Brown's home in Grand Forks. Anne's sense of humor was so fun and the love and respect you shared was so evident. Please accept our sympathies. Jann and Steve Larson

Dear Jerry & Family,

We are so sorry to hear of Anne's death. She was such a joy to talk to when we saw each other at 7:00 AM Mass so many years ago. We are thinking of you at this very sad time.

Jerry,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in your loss of such a great lady as Anne. Since your moving to California, and Bob Norman's death I have not seen much of you except on some of your return visits when you and Anne would stop by the funeral home, after our moving here to the Ozark's, and returning to Grand Forks on occassional visits passing by Concrete Inc always brings back memories of you both.

Jinny and I very sorry to hear of Anne's death. We often think of our old friends and when I see concrete mfg. I also think of you. You were also very considerate and I value our friendship and business reloations highly. We now live in the Rio Grand Valley, farm land similar to home except there is oil under the fields and we have orange and grapefruit trees in our yard. Our prayers to you and your family.
