Anthony Scott Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 15 to Jan. 17, 2021.
Dr. Anthony Lynn Scott of Winter Park, Florida left this world on January 10, 2021.

"Tony" was born on April 24, 1938, and raised in the small town of Fox Lake, Illinois. He spent his childhood playing sports, and on the water and in the woods of the rural Midwest. He began university studies at Kenyon College in Ohio, and then medical school at Northwestern University where he graduated in 1964. He was an accomplished collegiate athlete and student.

After completing a general surgery residency in Detroit and then Orlando, he voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served as a Major and medical doctor on military bases in Turkey, during the Cold War.

Upon his return stateside, he settled in Florida with his family, and began private practice as a general surgeon. His wide-ranging knowledge of medicine, and his kind bedside manner, made him a well-known doctor in Central Florida. At Orlando Regional Medical Center, he was Chief of General Surgery for a number of years, and taught in the residency program.

He formally retired from medicine in 2008, spending his free time with family, improving his golf game, reading by the lake, and continuing to consult with the ORMC residency program. Over his 12 years of retirement, he made wonderful friends as part of the Winter Park Men's Golf Association.

Among the many people who knew him, Tony was beloved for his acts of kindness and service, whether it was someone in need of medical assistance, or someone simply in search of a good book or conversation. His understanding and curiosities extended beyond medicine into history, philosophy, and the natural world.

This winter, like so many, he faced COVID-19 and its complications. Till the end, he was strong and in good spirits.

He survived by his wife, Judi, and his children and many grandchildren. We will always love him. His legacy of care and generosity will live on.

In lieu of a memorial service, the family has set up a foundation at Orlando Health to support the studies of future general surgeons. Donations can be made at the Anthony L. Scott Memorial Fund at:

When the pandemic eventually subsides, there will be a celebration of Tony's life at Ponce Inlet in New Smyrna Beach.

I have worked with Dr Scott for a long time also. Very sad to hear of his passing. My heart goes out to the family. He was a great surgeon and a caring person.Hardly ever lost his temper. One Christmas he came in with gifts for the staff. Just a memento of their personality. I have kept this every since.Good place to keep your pennies. My heart goes out to the family.

All my memories of Tony are happy. He was always a kind person when we were growing up and remained that way as an adult. He was lots of fun and had a dry but sharp sense of humor. The world has lost a truly gracious man. Much love to his family.

For forty years I have had the privilege of having Dr. Tony Scott as my Brother-in-Law. From day one the two of us hit it off and over all these years we´ve really enjoyed each other´s company. Incredibly, Tony seemed to be knowledgeable on most any subject. We had great discussions on History and Sports and our Families - and you name it. I so appreciated Tony´s sense of humor and loved hearing his jokes and all his Life Stories that he could tell so well. Rarely did I arrive up in Winter Park (or depart) without Tony handing me a favorite/interesting book of his that he loved to share and send me home with. Someone told me long ago that " if Dr. Scott goes to his bookshelf and hands you a book to take away with you - then that means he really likes you!" Tony was very generous and made our daughters feel as part of his family, including them on Summer vacations and outings. He helped and advised my wife Rita over all those years with needed Medical advice and procedures. Tony´s mother (Connie) was a wonderful lady who lived well past 100. I always kind of felt like we would all have Tony around for a lot longer - but this Covid 19 is a horrible killer! Rest In Peace Tony - Rita and I will sure miss you and appreciated you very much. Our love to Judi and all our nieces and nephews. GOD Bless.

I will miss "the librarian". Although I only knew Doc for a short time, he always brightened my Wednesday mornings with the Winter Park Mens golf group, with new "old" historical sports books to lend, as well a good story about his life. RIP Tony.

I am a member of the golf league that Tony was affiliated with. The best part of playing my round on Wednesday
was the gathering after the round. Tony´s table was the one you wanted to be sitting at. His wit and storytelling was unique and entertaining. He would always have a book or two to hand out to his fellow golfers. Then you would give him a verbal report when you handed it back to him. A true gentleman. RIP my friend.
