Bernard Borie Jr.

Bernard Simon Borie, Jr, of Oak Ridge, Tennessee died peacefully Tuesday November 30th in a local hospital. He was 86 years old. He was a New Orleans native, and graduated from Opelousas High School. He attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now known as University of Louisiana, Lafayette) and received a BS in Electrical Engineering. After college, he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he attended Tulane University where he obtained a MS in Physics, and MIT, where he obtained a PhD in Physics. After completing a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Paris in 1957, he worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His research focused on crystallography and x-ray diffraction in the Metals and Ceramics Division, X-10 plant. He was a distinguished member of the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society and the East Tennessee Society of the Archaeological Institute of America.
In addition to his employment at the Lab, Mr. Borie taught in the Physics Department at the University of Tennessee and served as a Visiting Professor at Cornell University and the University of California at Berkeley. His non-academic interests included the history of Western Civilization, the Fine Arts, professional tennis, UT football and good Cajun food. He was also an avid tennis player and a member of the Cedar Bluff Racquet Club for many years. He will be dearly missed and remembered as a great scholar and teacher with a unique ability to impart his knowledge of physical science and history.
He is survived by three daughters: Kathleen Borie Taylor of San Francisco, Fabienne Borie McGovern of Houston and Marianne Borie of Chicago, and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Edward T. L. "Ned" Borie of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and his sister, Lucille Borie Langenbeck of New Orleans, seven beloved first cousins and nine nieces and nephews.
