Brian Barrett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 5, 2023.
Brian Paul Barrett, of Waterloo, Ontario, passed away on Christmas Day surrounded by his family after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He was 79.

Brian was born to Hugh and Stella (nee Jackson) in Kingston, Ontario. He is survived by his brother, Peter (Susan), and sister, Diane Weber. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Geert Weber.

In 1964, Brian met the love of his life and best friend, Mary Eleanor (nee Christie), at the University of Toronto Survey Camp on Gull Lake in Minden, Ontario. Brian and Mary were married on December 20, 1968, in Toronto, Ontario. Throughout their 54 years together, they built a lifetime of memories and were extremely proud of their four sons: Chris (Janet), Rob (Brett), Mike (Holly), and Dave (Kim). He was a well-loved Papa and will be deeply missed by his ten grandchildren: Emma, Matthew, Devin, Isabelle, Ben, Jocelyn, Kate, Claire, Harper, and Sam. Treats and walks with Papa will be missed by his many grand puppies.

Brian graduated from Burnhamthorpe High School in Toronto in 1962 and went on to study at the University of Toronto. After graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering, Brian started his career at McCormick Rankin as a junior engineer, later moving to Arnott Construction as an estimator. In 1973, Brian joined Steed and Evans Limited in Kitchener, Ontario as a general manager. His passion and vision for the heavy construction industry led Roy Steed and Denis Evans to choose Brian as their successor, appointing him as President and later majority shareholder. Over his 33-year tenure, Brian's team-focused leadership style of mutual respect and hard work guided the company to be a leader in the industry. He was proud to continue the tradition of employee ownership which today is in its fourth generation. Brian's commitment to the industry extended beyond the walls of Steed and Evans. He was one of the founders of the Conestoga Heavy Construction Association and served as their first President. An active member of the Ontario Road Builder's Association, he served on the board of directors and was President in 1995.

In 2007, Brian retired from Steed and Evans and began the next chapter of his life. His passion for construction allowed him and Mary to pursue many exciting building projects, including rebuilding the family cottage to create a warm space for the whole family to make memories, carry on traditions, and generally cause a ruckus. Brian didn't know how to sit still and was always finding ways to channel his energy, including renovations at both homes in Waterloo and Naples, Florida. He always had to have a project and a to-do list on the go. Travelling with Mary and family gave Brian immense joy. Together with his best friend, Brian got to see the world and expand his horizons. He loved being able to go on trips with his children and their families, especially to Disney World where he was able to be a big kid. Brian was an active member of Westmount Golf and Country Club in Kitchener and Club Pelican Bay in Naples. An average golfer, Brian was an extraordinary social member and made many wonderful friends at both clubs. Brian worked hard and played hard, never holding back. His contagious laugh and indomitable spirit will live on.

A celebration of Brian's inspiring life will be held at Westmount Golf and Country Club on Sunday April 30, 2023. Donations in memory of Brian may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

So many great memories. Brian made a difference in many lives. Like Bud Christie, Mary s Dad, he would light up a room and always made you feel your conversation was important.

To all the family, my deepest condolences on the loss of Brian. I remember well how warm and welcoming he and Mary always were to me and all of Chris' friends. We all felt happy and at home at the place in Waterloo and the cottage. I will remember his laugh and his kindness. He's gone too soon but his legacy lives on. Greg Puley

Brian will be missed by family and friends. A truly honourable man to know and love. Great memories started in Guelph, then Waterloo and at Gull Lake.
