Calvin Allen Turner Jr. died Saturday, March 17, 2012, surrounded by his family in Seguin, Texas. A graveside service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, March 24th, at Kingsbury Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Patricia "Janie" Kersey Turner; son James Turner and daughter-in-law-to-be Jean Scheidnes; daughter Terri Turner Blang and son-in-law Bryan Blang; and grandsons Keaton Blang, Conner Blang, Chase Allison and Kaden Allison.

Calvin was born in Seguin to Calvin "Cab" Turner Sr. and Charlissa Smith Turner on August 14, 1945. (V-J Day, as he liked to point out.) He graduated from Seguin High School in 1964. Thereafter, during the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Air Force as an air policeman based in Utapao, Thailand.

He entered the Texas Game Warden Academy in December 1972. His father and great uncle had been game wardens, and his son would become one, too. It was Calvin's true calling, which brought him excitement, fulfillment and a lifetime of great stories.

An act of bravery put him in the headlines at one point, when Texas Monthly and other magazines covered his rescue of his diving instructor Don Dibble. Dibble, who specialized in rescue and recovery, had gone into Jacob's Well, an artesian well of Edwards Aquifer in Wimberley, in search of a group of men who had disappeared into a chamber, when a landslide trapped him. Calvin managed to get to Dibble, give him oxygen and bring him to the surface. He cared little for the resulting publicity, as he had simply acted out of his everyday sense of duty and professionalism. He served in Hays County for 23 years, until 1995.

After retiring from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, Calvin worked as a special investigator in the office of the Hays County district attorney, then relocated to Lake LBJ, where he became the unofficial handyman of Highland Haven. Calvin was always ready to help anyone with anything.

One thing friends admired most about Calvin was his marriage. He wed young, adored his wife, and would have celebrated their 46th anniversary in June. Although the couple endured hardships, including the passing of their daughter Lori Turner Allison in 2007, the steadfastness and playful nature of their relationship was an inspiration to all who knew them. They have a large extended family with a tendency to gather at their house, especially when Calvin would smoke brisket. Many said, without hesitation, that it was the best brisket they ever had.

Since resettling in Seguin in 2007, he was committed to daily coffees with old friends. If he wasn't socializing at IHOP, he could usually be found in his workshop with his extensive tool collection (antique and modern.) He had a soft spot for Max, a surly rat terrier/Chihuahua mix, with whom he was inseparable for the past 10 years.

Calvin is also survived by three siblings-Donna Jean "Smokey" Taylor, Morgan Turner and Shauna Turner Bell-and numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and in-laws.

Calvin was a stern father, with high expectations, but he was also a teddy bear. He was gregarious and loved to laugh. He had a wicked sense of humor, a great deadpan delivery, and was always ready with a prank.

He will be missed tremendously.

Calvin was an active member of the Guadalupe County 100 Club which supports families of fallen or injured first responders. The family requests that donations be made to this organization in lieu of flowers.

Although we were just casual acquaintances via visiting at Ciros on Friday nights, he displayed to us all the great traits mentioned in his obituary and then some!! He was always ready with a joke and always smiling even with strangers; just wish we could have known him even better. He left way too soon!! He will be missed even by casual friends and our thoughts and prayers go out to Janie, the rest of family and his many friends for your great loss.

Janie, Terri, & Jim:
I was both stunned and saddened this morning in learning of Calvin's passing. His quick wit and perfectly timed humor made working with him both enjoyable and memorable. He loved and cared for you guys, and was a true friend, eager to give whatever he had in order to help out. He will be missed, but I'm confident that, with the Lord's help, each of you will find peace and strength.

It is rare to cross paths with someone like Calvin. One of the traits I admired most in him was the way he could instantly make someone from any walk of life feel good about themselves. Robert and I used to meet at IHOP for breakfast in the mornings and one day a man in a cowboy hat appeared sat by himself to read his paper. He found his way into our conversations and it quickly became entertaining to interrupt his reading the paper. Before long we just all sat at the same table and Calvin gave up the newspaper. Looking back on it, Calvin was directly responsible for creating many friendships as the coffee club grew. The friendships with those we already knew became closer and stronger, and those that we did not know fell right in and we all felt like we knew each other for a lifetime. It was only after his passing that I realized that I had only known him 3-4 years, but felt like we had been lifelong friends. I am truly blessed to have known Calvin and his family and will miss him more than most will know.

Dear Janie,
How have you been after Jeannie and I left? Jeannie did her good job taking me to Austin airport on Sunday and headed to Dallas directly.
It was a short stay, but it was most memorable three days to me.
I felt I got welcomed into a very sweet family instantly on Friday and honored to be part of Calvin's ceremony on Saturday. Obviously he was a very respected and loved man in town and we all are very unfortunate not to meet him earlier. The ceremony was the very peaceful, beautiful, yet solemn event and we'll cherish it forever. Please forgive me that not all family were able to participate, but I told them all about my three days. When I arrived San diego, it was rainy and I sensed Calvin was in SD, too. We look forward to welcoming you and Terry's family for Jean and Jim very soon. We love you very much. Shinja with Dave

Janie, Jim, and Terri, Our love and prayers are with you all and we're here for you. Calvin was a true friend and we'll never forget the kindness he showed to us after the flood of '98 when he showed up with a truck full of tools and supplies, ready to help us with the clean up. And what a help he was--not only working through the mess, but keeping our spirits high with his laughter and jokes! He was and will continue to be an inspiration to us and we are better for having known him. Janie, he left here before getting the hot tub, but I'll bet he's waiting for you at the one in heaven, and we'll all meet there! Love you all.

Janie, you know our hearts are with you and Terri and Jim, WE love you much, Pat & Jim Kersey.

I don't believe we ever met, Janie, and I probably haven't seen Calvin since we graduated from SHS in 1963. We were neighbors while in grade school and highschool classmates. I remember Calvin as being easy to get along with and a genuinely nice "guy." It is pleasing to learn of his rich family and professional life, but sad that life ended so young. Please extend my condolences to Smokey and all Calvin's siblings. My deepest sympathy to you and your/Calvin's family. Stephanie "Stevie" Maley (nee Sagebiel)

Calvin had a big hug for me every time I ever saw him to go along with his big heart. He had a wonderful dry sense of humor, always had a twinkle in his eye. I think of Calvin as someone who probably never met a stranger and always made you feel special. You couldn't help but love him. My family always looked forward the times we were able to spend with Turner family on our trips home. Janie, you and Calvin where a great team and you brought out the best in each other and I see those traits in the three terrific children you raised.
