Add memories that will last forever

Not sure what to say?

Michael Guin

On behalf of our family I would like to thank each and every one of you who have signed this guest book. It means so much to us to know many people my Dad touched. He was definitely a "people person".

Anytime we would go somewhere out of town my Dad would inevitably run into someone he had met in his adventures. The last such occasion was at the hospital in Austin, August 28th 2007, when our son (his grandson) was born. He was looking through the glass in the hospital nursery as the nurse gave Devin his first bath. Another proud Grandpa who was also looking on at his new Grandchild leaned over and said "David Guin"? It was like that everywhere we went.

Thank you again for taking the time to stop by and leave your messages. We will print them out and cherish them forever.

Guin, I am really going ot miss you. You have been my closest friend for the last 15 or so years and I will feel lost without the ability to enjoy your wit, your wisdom and your stories. Mostly I will just miss being in your company, regardless of the reason or the purpose. I will be with you soon my friend.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

I got to know David at various TAA and NAA meetings and events and what I will always remember about him is the smile he always had on his face and his warm greeting. He made me feel welcome and I knew if I needed anything he was there to help. He is truly blessed for the kindness he shared with others.

David Guin was a joy to know and learn from, in so many ways. I am sad that we are losing a person who had so much to give and share, and was always thinking of others. He was a friend, confidant, advisor, smart association executive, funny story teller and much more to me, our staff and members at the Houston Apartment Association. The memories he leaves behind are very special. I only wish he had more time in his retirement to create more of those memories. The thoughts and prayers of Houston Apartment Association staff and members are with David's family and the whole San Antonio AA family.

David Guin was one of two heroes I have had in my life. One night, I was fortunate enough to introduce him to my wife as a man I admired and, who after my father, I had learned the most from in business. David responded by saying that I made him laugh. I am glad that I got to tell him how I felt about him, and I am humbled, as I was then, that I made a great man such as David Guin laugh (although he laughed easily enough). When I informed my wife of his passing she remembered him as the lovely, cheerful, gentle man who had been so flattering to her on the few occasions she had met him. The fact that David was a true Gentleman shone through more then all the things that I had said to her about why I admired him.

Mentor, advocate, advisor, counselor, cheerleader, tour guide, historian, supporter, negotiator, diplomat, comedian, West Texas boy, and friend to many lucky folks, including me – these are just a few of the words that come to mind when I think fondly of David and remember the many good times I have shared with him. His enthusiastic leadership of the San Antonio Apartment Association, both as a volunteer and as the executive director, will be remembered for many years to come and the accomplishments made during his tenure there will be evident for at least as long. He will be greatly missed but will be with us in spirit always. My thoughts and prayers go to David’s family and friends in this difficult time.

In Life there are many people.

There are those that should, but don't.
There are those that could, but won't.
There are those that would , but can't.

Then there was David Guin.

He did what he should.
He did what he could.
He did for those that couldn't.

He did it all!
For those he knew, for those he met and for those he left behind.

Words cannot express my sorrow for the loss of David. He was one of those rare individuals that gave so much of himself to those around him. He is was the true definition of a good friend. I was shocked to here about your loss. I told David after finding about his retirement at the last A.E. meeting in S.A.that I personally would miss him because he was so friendly to me when I first arrived as an A.E. 15 years ago and that continued. I am saddening that he didn't enjoy his retirement and more golf games. You can be assured that he is now playing on the most beautifully coruses that we will see one day. You will see him again.

It is so hard to express in words how much David meant to me. I am so grateful to have known him, he will always be very dear to me and my heart breaks to know I won't be able to meet him for our monthly lunches at Macaroni Grill drinking a glass of Kendall Jackson chardonnay anymore. For over 13 years, he has mentored me, was a father figure to me, and we have shared many, many good stories of our lives together, laughing and appreciating each others company. He always made my day! The gift he gave me is one of love and laughter and I am thankful we were able to meet one more time for lunch before the SAAA tradeshow. I love you David and I miss you more than you can ever imagine. I can still feel your hug and hear you say "you made my day." Thank you for being my dear, dear friend. My sympathies to Martha, his son, daughter-in-law and their precious baby boy. David was a great man and I thank you for sharing him with me if even for a little while.

David served on the TAA Executive Committee shortly after I joined the staff. I learned a lot from him then, and even more from him when he became SAAA's executive director. David was unfailingly honest, always challenging, and completely committed to delivering excellence to the association's members. Unquestionably, he will be missed, but the standards he set--and reached--will surely contribute to his legacy within the rental housing industry.

I will always remember him as one of my more enjoyable friends at TAA.

I met David in San Antonio several years ago while attending the NAA Assembly of Delegates meeting. He was warm and friendly right off the bat...I left feeling like we had been friends for a long time. He was such a great guy that it saddened me to learn that he was planning to retire this year. Being part of David's extended "family, the SAAA staff, was extremely educational. Never without a story to tell, he was always very entertaining. It is so difficult to accept that his "I'm outta here" on Friday afternoon was the last words we would hear him utter. We will take great comfort in knowing that he's up at the Pearly Gates, bending St Peter's ear with all the many stories about growing up in the Valley, the different jobs he has had, and all of the different personalities he has come across in his life. Hopefully he's got a few good stories about us, his staff.

David's big fish story - that wasn't a story!!
