Conrad Myers Rothrauff was born August 5, 1930 in Lock #4, Pennsylvania. He spent his early years in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania with his father Guido Anthony, his mother Mary Pauline Myers and his older brother, Guido Anthony. His family moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he was editor of his high school newspaper, elected to the Honorary Society and worked for the Cleveland News.
After a year at Western Reserve University, he transferred to Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio. At Heidelberg, he was on the staff of the college newspaper, The Kilikilik, and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts in music. After attending Bexley Seminary for a year, he joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky for two years. He then studied at Ohio State University where he was a student instructor in the Classics Department, worked in the Art Department and received a Masters in Latin in 1957.
He taught four years in the Classics Department at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania where he was tutored in French and German in preparation for a subsequent doctoral degree. He obtained his Ph.D. in Ancient Greek and Philosophy at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio in 1964. Meanwhile, during the school year of 1963-1964, he was an instructor in the Classics Department at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
In the fall of 1964, he became a full professor at the State University of New York in Potsdam and taught for 24 years in the English Department. He was editor of Names, Journal of the American Names Society and is listed in Volume 3, 5th edition of the Directory of American Scholars of Foreign Languages and Linguistic Philosophy. In 1988 he retired from teaching and moved with his wife to Gainesville, Florida.
In January 1954 he married Alice Herr, a college classmate, of Dayton, Ohio. Three children were born to the couple: Linda in 1955 in Fort Campbell Kentucky, Charles in 1957 in Columbus, Ohio and Nancy in 1959 in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.
He passed away on December 13, 2014. A funeral service was held at the Williams-Thomas Funeral Home in Gainesville, Florida with Reverend Carl Romey officiating. He is buried at Countryside Cemetery in Gainesville, Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Alice, three children, Linda Ramis, Charles Rothrauff and Nancy Bartlett, two grandchildren, Cassandra Rothrauff and Catherine Rothrauff, a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Rothrauff, and two sons-in-law, Luis Ramis and Patrick Bartlett. He is predeceased by his parents and brother.
Home was important to him. He was a loving, faithful and devoted husband, father and family man.
