Craig Wymond Wilcox
November 2, 1954-August 26, 2023
Storyteller, Story-lover, Protector, Prankster, Fashionista,
Proud Stepdad, Big Brother, Fun Uncle.
Craig was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1954. His father and mother were both Marines in World War II who met in
San Diego, CA. Craig was immensely proud of their service. After the war, his parents moved to Michigan and started their family. He grew up with an older brother and three younger sisters on Strathmoor Street, in Detroit, Michigan. He spent his teen years at Cass Tech High School and his family was heavily involved in church at Ward Memorial Presbyterian, Detroit. Church was he met his love of the last 19 years, Barbara.
With pride and admiration for his father and uncles' service in the Detroit Police Department, Craig became a 2nd generation Detroit policeman in 1974. He served in several assignments from Patrolman, Vice, Narcotics, Community Liaison, and protection for political dignitaries visiting Detroit. He also qualified for the Detroit Police Pistol Team and received citations for his service. Though Craig pursued and enjoyed other careers, his service as a policeman was his favorite. A dear friend recently stated Craig was, "once a cop, always a cop".
While serving as a policeman, Craig finished his Bachelor of Criminal Justice degree from Madonna University and received his MBA in Finance from the University of Michigan in 1985.
The next six years he worked for the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago, IL and Washington D.C. as a Senior Auditor performing audit examinations of Banks in cities throughout the country.
His experience as a Bank Auditor led him to Old Kent Bank in Grand Rapids. Then segued to the Real Estate Industry as Mortgage Loan Officer, Realtor for Century 21 Row and Associate Broker for Real Estate One & Keller Williams Showcase. During 2009-2013, he returned to Detroit to help 100+ residents in several inner-city neighborhoods rework their mortgages after the mortgage crisis of 2008. In 2014, he started True Blue Property Management to assist local and out-of-state residential Landlords manage their properties. The "True Blue" name he established meant commitment and referenced his pride in his "Blue" police beginnings and "Go Blue" at U of M.
Craig had many passions. He was a terrific cook proud to share his unique recipes. An avid reader. Loved playing games with family and friends. Loved antiques and old houses because "those things had a story". Loved art fairs. Loved shopping. The man had great style with elaborate designer shirt and shoe collections that embodied his witty, colorful character.
Craig was predeceased by his parents Mary and Bruce Wilcox, brother Mark Wilcox, and sister Janette (Wilcox) Bageris. Craig is survived by his partner of 19 years Barbara Bain, by the 3 he adored and considered his own--his stepson Sean, and much-loved Jenifer Alex Bain and Andrew (Nikki) Bain. Also survived by his sisters Cheryl (Michael) Wilcox-Long and Patricia Journey, along with his nieces and nephews Mellissa (David) Kielian, Tyler Bageris, Trevor Bageris, Analiese Long, Nathaniel Journey, and Sidney Journey.
Craig Wilcox requested a celebration of life party as opposed to a traditional funeral. Plans are forthcoming.
Craig battled stage 4 Renal Cell Carcinoma with lung and brain metastasis for the past 33 months with determination and positivity. And of course, his wit.
