Danny Eugene Hardman, 62, of Shinnston, passed away at his home Tuesday (March 2, 2010).
Danny was born in Clarksburg on Aug. 1, 1947, the son of Mildred G. Buckhanon Hardman and the late Charles F. Hardman, who died in the Farmington No. 9 mine explosion on Nov. 20, 1968. Mr. Hardman was married to the late Janet M. Bragg Hardman on July 4, 1992.
In addition to his mother, Danny is survived by two brothers, C. Rick Hardman of Butler, Pa., and Darrell "Chip" Hardman and wife Lisa of Hepzibah; three sons, Stephen Hardman of Shinnston, Aaron Hardman and wife Cindy of Point Pleasant, and Danny Hardman of Point Pleasant; former wife, Ann Sampson Combs of Point Pleasant; and eight grandchildren, Stephen Hardman Jr., Zachary Hardman, Nichole Sears, Kaitlyn Hardman, Skylar Bragg, Joshua Corwin, Christopher Corwin and Justin Corwin.
Mr. Hardman was a 1966 graduate of Shinnston High School, after which he served our nation in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He worked on the construction of the Harrison Power Plant, and also Robinson Run Mine No. 95, from which he retired after 28 years. Danny was a member of Christ Church United Methodist in Shinnston. He also held several offices in American Legion Post No. 31, including former 1st Vice Commander. This was in addition to the various 3rd District and West Virginia state offices he held within the American Legion.
Danny enjoyed coaching Little League and Minor League baseball in the '70s. He was inspired by his father's local legacy, Charlie Hardman, who is credited as one of the founders of the Shinnston Little League in the '50s. Danny played Little League as a second basemen in the '50s, and his proudest moment as a child came in the last game of his last season. He hit a home run and was used as a surprise relief pitcher and saved the game. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping the way he was taught as a youngster. He enjoyed competition of the sport of hunting and fishing, and always drove to be the best of the group. Danny enjoyed gatherings with family and friends. He was known for his ability to make a humorous remark that would even entertain a stranger, who would soon become a friend.
Friends will be received at Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Brian Plum and the Rev. Tom Snyder officiating. Entombment will follow at Shinnston Masonic Cemetery Mausoleum with full military honors rendered.
