Darrell F Newman, a long-time Richland resident, passed away at home on January 13, 2023, while under the care of the wonderful Heartlinks Hospice RN, Michelle, and the Bather, Juana.
He was born on March 22, 1940, in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He attended school in Junction City, Kansas, and graduated from Junction City High School in 1958. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nuclear Engineering from Kansas State University in 1963. He then served two years as a lieutenant in the US Army at Fort Riley, Kansas, before moving to Richland, Washington. He received a Master of Science Degree from the University of Washington in 1970.
Darrell was a top nuclear engineer with a long and interesting career at Battelle. His work included designing reactor development operations, patents, and managing the Nunn-Lugar plutonium reduction program in Russia.
He was an avid Sudoku puzzle solver-the more difficult the better.
He found great pleasure in music and sang in his church choirs at Richland Baptist, Central United Protestant, and First Presbyterian, as well as with the Mid-Columbia Mastersingers. He also liked to play and tune his grand piano.
Darrell was like a kid waiting for the neighborhood pool to open for the summer. He took advantage of the 12 pm to 1 pm Adult Lap Swim Monday through Friday, and then enjoyed soaking up the sun. One of his favorite memories was swimming the motu, a coral island in Tahiti, with his friend Fred Goldsberry.
Darrell and Sue traveled and cruised the world, from the Arctic to the north and Cape Horn to the south, as well as many, many interesting places in between.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lillian Newman, his son, Donald Farley Newman, and his older brother, Ronald Newman.
He is survived by his wife, Sue, of 56 years; his sister, Carolyn Simon; and nieces and nephews: Vicki Shruhan, Charlie Newman, David Newman, Annisa Wright, and Andrew Irwin.
Darrell will be greatly missed by family and friends.
There will be a viewing on Wednesday, January 18, from 5 pm to 8 pm, at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Homes, 1401 S Union St, Kennewick, with funeral services to be held there on Thursday, January 19th, at 3 pm.
