David Allen Thoen

Thoen, David Allen 58 07/06/1952 02/04/2011 David passed away peacefully after a hard fought two-year battle with cancer, with his family at his side. Born in Portland to Monte L. and Doris R. Thoen, David was a true Oregonian, living his entire life in the Portland area. A 1987 graduate of Oregon State University, David worked for Nationwide Insurance, Regence Blue Cross and at the time of his death was employed as a financial analyst for Schnitzer Steel. An avid photographer, David loved using the landscapes of Oregon as a backdrop for many of his beautiful photos. He also enjoyed traveling to the Oregon coast, Canada and, most recently, to China. In 2007, David returned to school at George Fox University to pursue his Master of Business Administration. Shortly after enrolling, he was diagnosed with cancer. Not to be deterred, David completed the MBA program and received his diploma at a special commencement ceremony arranged by Providence Cancer Center and George Fox University. His courage and determination was a true inspiration for us all. He is survived by his father and mother of Portland; brother, Rick (Julie) of Henderson, Nev.; nieces, Alicia (Bryan) Peterson of San Tan Valley, Ariz., and Theresa Hutchins of Mesa, Ariz.; great-nephews, Cameron Peterson and Alex Hutchins; great-niece, Kailee Hutchins; and companion, Arlene Lincoln of Portland. A memorial service will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, in Central Christian Church, 1844 S.E. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd. (39th Avenue), Portland. A wake will follow from 4 to 6 p.m. at O'Connors, 7850 S.W. Capitol Highway. Remembrances may be made to the Oregon Humane Society.
