David (Dave) R. Weiland, 77, of the Greenwood section of Moosic, passed away Thursday morning at River View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wilkes-Barre after a lengthy journey with Alzheimer's disease. He is survived by his devoted caregiver and loving wife of 20 years, Diane "Dee" (Deininger) Weiland.
Born on June 30, 1945, and son of the late Harold "Goosey" and Marie (Osborne) Weiland, Dave was a graduate of the former Scranton Technical High School. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy, honorably serving four years in the Vietnam War.
A graduate of the University of Scranton with a bachelor's degree in accounting, he also earned his master's degree from Marywood University.
A longtime cost accountant, Dave worked in the local banking industry. After 20 years with the former Northeast National Bank, he would retire from Peoples Security Bank. Dave was kind, caring, soft-spoken and a great listener. Of Roman Catholic faith, he was also a member of Divine Mercy Parish in Scranton.
He and Dee had certainly made the most of their time together, creating countless memories through unforgettable experiences along the way. From snowshoeing, kayaking, biking and fishing, to hiking through the most notable U.S. National Parks, they truly enjoyed the outdoors and being together. Certainly now at peace, Dave will forever be missed.
He is also survived by his stepsons, John Kasaczun and wife, Gabrielle, of Scranton, and Jeff Kasaczum of East Norriton; a grandson, John Paul Kasaczum; and nieces and nephews.
Dave was also preceded in death by his first wife, Diane (Xylander) Weiland, on Aug. 23, 1998; and brothers, Donald, Kenneth and Michael Weiland.
Dee would like to thank the entire staff of River View Nursing Center for the extraordinary care given to Dave throughout his stay and to Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their kindness and compassion.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m. at Divine Mercy Parish, 312 Davis St. in Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Francis Pauselli, pastor. Burial with military honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow at Fairview Memorial Park in Elmhurst Twp. Family and friends may pay their respects at the church on the day of the funeral from 10 a.m. until Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dave's name to the St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen, c/o 500 Penn Ave., Scranton, Pa. 18503.
