What a joy to have known her when they were here in Richmond Virginia. We went to the same church and I taught Jason swimming. We chatted on the phone a lot and she gave me some wonderful advice on raising my own sons. What a blessing she was and still is with the legacy she leaves behind.

Rest in Heaven Mrs. Marsalis. Your work speaks for you through your husband and sons due to your legacy. All our musician families represent the great city of New Orleans and abroad. My father, Andrew Jefferson(drummer) of the Olympia Brass Band, and uncle Thomas Jefferson, (Trumpeter) influenced us with our jazz music from childhood til today. We will always remember our contribution to the legacy of this city and mothers like you who led the path and kept them grounded.

Years ago my husband and I had the pleasure of having two of the Marsalis Grandchildren in our Challenges summer camp. Because their parents were out of town, Dolores and Ellis filled in on every Parents' Day and parents' discussion. They were all wonderful additions to our Camp and I bet that those two children are doing fabulously. God Bless.

For the rest of my life, I will find joy in the many conversations I was blessed to have with Dolores. I would call, looking for Ellis, and she and I would inevitably discuss issues of the day, family history, and other, always meaningful things. I was delighted when one day she asked about my family and I learned that she was related to Alphonse Picou, "that means we're probably related, you know" she said, and I couldn't be happier at the thought. Dolores had a fierce wit fueled by a fire within her that I could only imagine how it must've shaped her sons in their years of conversations around the dinner table. I will be forever grateful for the conversations she and I had, and for my relationship with her, Ellis and the family. My deepest sympathies to the family, and my congratulations that you were blessed to be raised by, and have so many decades with, such a great woman!

There are people that we meet who impact us, who change us for the better. Delores was one of those people. We were having a conversation one day about mothers, and I was telling her about mine. I have often thought of it and her looking at me, telling me that she was like my mother. And, she was. They weren't skwishy, cuddly mothers. No. But they were mothers who had a job to do and that was to raise their children to be the very best people that they could be. It was a gift to have known her.

I'd met Miss Delores working with Lula Elzy and she was NOT one to suffer fools. There are stories to tell, naturally, and I chuckle at her calling me that Lombard kid (I was 33 when we met). A remarkable woman that touched many lives, she will be missed by many. Onaje Lombard

I have shared many fun times with Dolores. I will always remember when as a young teenager I rode to Grambling to pick up Dolores. She was always ready to feed you and her food was always delicious. My fondest memory of Dolores was watching her sitting in the swing on the porch holding and comforting my special needs grandson . I will miss you Dolores you were special.
