Prescott, Douglas Anthony Tustin native Douglas Anthony Prescott, 56, passed away on September 15, 2009. Born into a farming family, Doug pursued his loves of agriculture and adventure across the globe. A 1971 graduate of Mission Viejo High School, Doug and two of his brothers chose that school because it was the only school in the Tustin Unified School District at that time that had an agriculture curriculum. While only teenagers, Doug and his brothers Chad and Tommy opened Prescott Brothers Ranch Market at the corner of 17th and Newport in North Tustin, selling corn, pumpkins, strawberries, tomatoes, and more from 1966 until 1974. Standard Oil representative Frank Greinke granted the teen-aged entrepreneurs a credit card to facilitate purchase of fuel for their farming endeavors, a rare business risk for the time. Doug attended University of Nevada at Reno, but soon wanderlust compelled him to follow his brother, Chad, to Australia, to work at ranching and farm equipment repairs. He circumnavigated the continent of Australia, enjoying the wonders and excitement the continent offered. Doug continued to travel extensively his entire life, traversing North Africa, Europe, Russia, Japan, Asia and India, and absorbing everything he could. It was on one of his sojourns in India that Doug sought out Mother Teresa. They were traveling on a train together, and Mother Teresa said to him, "What would you like from me, my child?" With typical candor, Doug responded, "Nothing, I just want to chat." Doug loved to learn from the experience of others. With his magnetic personality and winning smile, he made friends wherever his traveling feet led him. He also hiked to the basecamp of Mt. Everest, the furthest one may travel without requiring oxygen. In later years, Doug co-owned an international export business and for over 15 years he has farmed 10,000 acres in Arizona where he grows cotton and vegetables. He was also the last owner of The Ranch House. Located on El Camino Real, this establishment was the oldest continually-operated saloon in Orange County. Doug took great delight in his holiday barbecues and feasts for the benefit of his patrons who had no family with whom to spend the holidays. Doug was generous to a fault. To the end, he was a strong Tustin booster, instrumental in the building of the Acorn Naturalist building, lobbying for the development and community enhancement of Tustin, and a welcome site at the Tustin Chili Cook-Off with his mouth-watering wood-grilled tri-tip sandwiches. Doug cheated the Grim Reaper on numerous occasions. He was run over by a tractor at the age of 15, rolled a truck off Saddleback Peak as a teen, and survived a serious auto accident in Finland. The car was totaled, but Doug was not. He was an avid outdoorsman. He was happiest at the family cabin at Big Bear Lake. Hunting, fishing, and archery were delights, and he was also an accomplished gourmet chef and avid gardener. Doug is survived by his loving son, Joseph Prescott; Joe's mother, Maureen Leaman; his mother, Mary Prescott; his brothers Chad, Earl, and Tommy (wife:Debbie), his Uncle Paul Lieb; Uncle Mark and Aunt Celestine Guho; fifteen nieces and nephews, and his dearest companion of many years, Jill Gibbons. Doug was preceded in death by his father, John A. Prescott and his uncle, Joseph Lieb. Doug lived life his own way and to its fullest, yet made his peace with his Lord before his death. Here is the inscription that Mother Teresa personally inscribed in her book to Doug on that long-ago trip to Calcutta: "Dear Douglas, The best way to show our gratitude to God and people is to accept everything with joy. A joyful Christian is like a sunshine of God's love, the hope of eternal happiness, the flame of burning love. May you serve the Church joyfully. God bless you, M Teresa MC 12/20/76." Doug Prescott was a joyful Christian. Arrangements are by Saddleback Chapel, Tustin. Graveside service of committal at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery on Saturday, September 19, at 10 am. A private funeral Mass has been held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to: The Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, 426-A West Almond Street, Orange, CA 92866. Douglas, May your wish of peace on Earth come true.
This was your wish for everybody in the world,
To have peace and happiness and all the love that they deserve.
To every mother and every father, every baby child, this is your Christmas prayer.
To all those who are hungry, may they never miss a meal.
All the broken hearted may they find a way to heal.
I'm sending out these hopes to high above, that this whole Earth just might some day be a little better place for the human race.
I'm hoping that a miracle will finally come to pass.
This is your Christmas prayer.
Peace to you Doug so high above.
All my Love, Maureen

Lieber Douglas,

As you fly away
on Wings of Grace
…the angels will appear,
and beckon you
to travel with them
to God's celestial sphere…

How can we forget
Your smiling heart,
That touched our lives
so true?

We’ll count the days
Here on earth
‘Til we’re together
again, with you…
_______________

When all the tears
are gone…
I’ll remember your
Smile the most…
It will keep me, now
from day to day
until we meet…
Again.

Written for you, Doug,
Will miss you,
Always,
Marilyn

I opened my computer to this sad news.
When you think one day we will make contact again and that day just passed.
I spent many fun holidays and special
family events in the 80s and early 90s at the Pereira's in San Luis Obispo. Doug was there many different times we were both God parents to Olivia one of their beautiful daughters. I remember
His grin like he was up to something or
he knew something. He always had something to say and adventures to share. I am so sorry to never see that grin again. Because we have faith in God we will one day meet again and that day I will ask what is behind that grin and that twinkle in your eye.
To his son Joeseph, may you have faith.
Your father touched so many people's lives in so many different ways. I close my eyes and I can see and hear his laugh as if it were yesterday.
God Bless All of you who are missing Doug today. Rindy

We are so sad to hear of Doug's passing. We came to know Doug in the 80's when we were young and carefree. Many good times with Doug in Tustin at some of our old hang outs like the Ancient Mariner, Rubin's and The Ranch House. He always had a kind word and a amazing smile with a beautiful laugh. My Dad, George Valentine did some furniture restorations for Doug and is deeply sadden as well. My prayers are with Joseph, Maureen and the family. He was an amazing guy with lots of stories to tell. We will miss him very much.
God Bless.

The first time I met Doug was on one of our rare rainy and stormy evenings about 20 years ago. Doug appeared at our front door to return our escaped Man-Bitting Dalmation "Smokie". Both were rain drenched, Doug was unbitten.
Smokie knew a Good Man when he met one. I also know a Good, Kind and Funny Man when I meet one. Doug was all of that and more. I will miss him.

The last time I saw Doug was at my fathers (Frank Greinke) funeral. We had the rare opportunity to dredge up childhood memories and laugh at our ignorance. No not innocence, ignorance! I reminded him of our 8th grade graduation party at Greg and Claire Kulda's house. They played the long version of Light My Fire by the Doors. Not wanting to admit that I was tired of dancing and neither did Doug we kept up a good face. Years later being able to admit this created a great laugh. Something I cherished at a seeming somber event like a funeral reception. Doug always had a ready laugh!
I am so sorry for your loss. There is no good time to die, but Doug was way too young to leave us. He is missed.

September 18, 2009

Doug was always a gentleman. I will miss my conversations with him about subjects as varied as international economics to local Tustin politics. Always generous Doug exemplified the Christian ethic.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. Mike and I came to know Doug when we moved to Tustin in 1984 and he became a very good friend. We moved back to our home in 1992 but tried to keep in touch and updated on what was happening with our friends there. We are saddened to hear about his passing and know that he will be missed by all the knew and loved him. Please know you have a new Guardian Angel to watch over you.
