Earl Halliwell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 14 to Jul. 16, 2009.
Earl Clifford Halliwell died on Saturday, July 11, 2009, in Joplin, Mo., at the age of 90 years. He was the son of Earl Crittenden Halliwell and Cecil DeMasters Halliwell, both of Joplin. He was born on Oct. 25, 1918, in the Chitwood Community near Joplin when his father was a World War I soldier in France. In Aug., 1941, he married Leota Josephine Williams, also of Joplin, who preceded him in death in 2002. They had one child, Douglas Earl Halliwell, who resides in Overland Park, Kan. Earl went to Joplin Public Schools through eighth grade. During the Great Depression, Earl and his brothers, Floyd and Ralph Wayne, used a hand-operated cross-cut saw to cut firewood to sell. He learned carpentry skills while working for the W. P. A. and later built his own house, a very sturdy structure of green oak. He worked for Stauffer Construction Company and then Ozark Engineering, from which he retired in 1984. He continued to work as a handyman for several years. Earl enjoyed a good meal, stamp-collecting, travel, making photo albums and doing home-improvement projects with family and friends. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. Earl is also survived by his two grandchildren, Earl Clayborne Halliwell, Lenexa, Kan., and Heather Joy Minelli, Washington, D.C. A sister, Gloria Williams, lives in Carl Junction, Mo. Graveside services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, July 18th, at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Parker Mortuary.

Earl was a man among men. He taught me so much when I worked with him at Ozark. My dad could never say enough good things about him.
I remember many times after he retired that we would sit on the front porch swing at his house and talk for hours.
Losing Leota was hard on him, but now we know he is with her, other family members, and so many friends, and will be forever. We will see him again.
I am in Texas and will be unable to attend the funeral. I wish I could. But know that you are in my prayers and thoughts.
Earl will never be forgotten, and he will be missed.
God Bless You All
