Mr. Cappel was a great encouragement and friend to me as a young, struggling, teacher. His influence and kind words helped me through a difficult period, and I suppose, as a fellow Avoyellean, he sort of took me under his wing and made a special effort to help me to get established in the teaching profession. I am still teaching at the age of 68 and Edmund will continue to live on for many years in the lives of those he has taught and those he has mentored. I will tell my students about him, and only hope that I can reflect a tiny bit of his professionalism and caring in my everyday tasks at school and in my life in general. May he rest in peace.

I feel so enriched to have had Uncle Edmund in my life. I am sure I am not alone. We all know he gave so much joy at the piano to his Marksville-rooted extended family through literally decades of annual Roy Parties'. For me personally, he said ok' to EVERY request I ever made of him. That included being the piano man at parties in my personal home for friends as well as at the Kappa Sigma House on the LSU campus for a themed Pat O' Brien's party in 1981! When I asked him to write a eulogy for my dad, Marion Peter Roy, Sr, he said yes once again. Of course he did an impeccable job penning it. Gifts' such as these defined this truly special man among men, His endless contributions to his friends, family and all the communities he graced will live on in perpetuity.

Our area has lost one of its most brilliant, gifted, congenial, kind-hearted, entertaining educators who has ever served the Lafourche Parish school system. I feel privileged to have known Ed Cappel and to have worked in the school board office during the time that he was employed as an English teacher and later as Coordinator of English Instruction throughout the public schools of the parish. He had a nickname for methe 8-tiered lady, because I used to bake 8-layer cakes. He even wrote a poem for me, entitled "Blanche, the Eight-Tiered Lady." I have no doubt that the angels in Heaven are now gathered around the piano with Ed leading them in song. His obituary sums it up nicely: There was, simply, no one else like him.

One can add to the long list of his titles--that of mentor. He was my student-teaching supervisor. I was scared to death of him because of rumors of his toughness, but I was assigned to him after my previously assigned supervisor, Mr. Scallan, moved away. I learned so much from this man in the few months of student-teaching that I carried with me through 35 years of teaching. I learned to modify what I learned to my personality, but the foundation began with Mr. Cappel. After student-teaching under his supervision, I felt as if I student-taught for more than 20 years when he became English Curriculum Supervisor and visited my classroom. He predicted that I would be one of the best teachers in the parish one day. I guess that became reality when I was named "Teacher of the Year" once before I retired. Rest in peace, Mr. Cappel. (I still can't call you Edmund.)He was a wonder! (Sorry about the "scared to death" cliché--I know you'd catch it!

I can hear his voice to this day, drawling out my name - Lahh-rence . I had him for English III, English IV and Comparative Literature at THS. I doubt I would have become a writer without him. I know I would not have the ability to interpret and critically analyze whatever I read without him. And I still have papers he graded. Such a prince among men.

Edmund was without a doubt the finest teacher I ever had, & that includes college & two graduate schools! I had 3 years of English instruction from Edmund starting at West Thibodaux Jr. High, & then he moved up to Thibodaux High with our class & he taught us English in both our Junior & Senior years. His teaching skills not only prepared me for college, they taught me how to teach others as well. I will always be grateful to the man who encouraged me to think in creative ways, to love & appreciate poetry, & to step up & perform without reservation. God Bless this exceptional man.

Mr. Cappel's beautifully descriptive obituary captures his essence! I think he would approve. His English IV class was a springboard for the development of my love of the written word and English literature. Edmund Cappel brought literature to life for those of us who were fortunate to call him Teacher'. Outstanding educator ... most definitely!
May his loving family be comforted by their blessed memories at this time.

Goodbye Mr. Cappel. No other Teacher like You. At My Wife's(Cathy Politz Mayson) fortieth Thibodaux High School reunion, Mr. Cappel called Her over to His table & dug through a box & came up with a graded paper of Her's that He had kept all those years. He did that for several people in Her class. What other teacher has anyone had that would do that. Wow. You will be missed.

I have so many memories of Edmond and singing around the piano at Christmas. While at Presentation School , one of the nuns asked us to write a story about what Christmas means to us. I wrote my story about The Roy Party' and singing on Christmas night. Needless to say, she wasn't impressed. I always placed myself right behind Edmond while he was playing. I would sing loud and so often he would turn around to me and say, Ames, that's enough.' Of course I kept singing loud in his ear. He was truly a special person in my life and I'm so fortunate to have known him. Amy Roy Gros

What a beautiful soul. Thanks for the decades of laughter, friendship, and spritual guidance. Am so grateful we were able to say thanks and goodbye in person on Friday. "And He will raise you up on eagle's wings..." Bon voyage, Eddie!
