F. SCHNEIDER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 2 to May 5, 2015.
SCHNEIDER, M.D., F. Richard 1929 - 2015 Richard was born in Berkeley, CA on October 6, 1929 to Franz Schneider and Katharyn Sweetser Schneider. He was involved in the Boy Scouts of America and earned the distinction of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Berkeley High School in 1946 and was given a scholarship to Dartmouth College as well as Harvard Medical School. Richard went east to college and medical school, earning his undergraduate degree at Dartmouth College in 1951, including a year in medicine simultaneously. He was then admitted to and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1954. He interned at Stanford University Hospital in San Francisco from 1954 thru 1955, and began his orthopaedic residency at Stanford, S.F. in July 1955. In January 1956 Dick joined the Navy rather than wait to be drafted into the Army. He served as a Medical Officer on a "tender" until December 1957, when he returned to Stanford to finish his residency. Dr. Schneider practiced orthopaedic surgery in Daly City, CA from 1961 to 1992. He was an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UC San Francisco from 1961 to 1986. He was Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Mary's Help/Seaton Hospital from 1970 to 1986. Dick lived in Healdsburg, CA since retiring from practice in 1995. He was brilliant and had a quick wit. Richard is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Scott (Martina); daughter, Kirsten Kubat (Terry); and stepson, Scott Lindstrom-Dake (Erica). He was a loving grandfather to Damien, Katharyn, Orion, Carter, Miles and Rowan, and great-grandfather to Oliver. In accordance with Dick's wishes there will be no memorial service. Hopefully each of us will remember Dick fondly in our own way.

I have all too few but still fond memories of a fellow Troop 7 Eagle Scout and fellow Harvard Medical School graduate along with Pete Irving. Somehow we missed each other in the years we both lived in the Healdsburg area after retirement but the memories of a fine friend remain.
