Francis Sweeney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 14, 2012.
Francis Xavier Sweeney, age 86 of Waterford, beloved husband for 62 years of Betty (Cragin) Sweeney passed away peacefully December 14th 2012 surrounded by his family. He was born March 3rd 1926 in Bangor Maine to Lucy (McGrath) Sweeney and Francis X Sweeney. Shortly after graduation from John Bapst Memorial High school in 1944, he served in the U.S. Navy Armed Guard as a gunner aboard the Liberty Ship Zane Gray during the World War II conflict in the European Theater and was honorably discharged in 1946. He attended Springfield College on the G.I. Bill, married Betty May Cragin in his junior year of college in 1950 and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and Biology in 1951. Francis was hired by the Waterford School System in 1951 as the physical education teacher on a rotation basis throughout the elementary school circuit at Jordan, Cohanzie, Quaker Hill, & Great Neck. His rotation later included teaching at South West and Clark Lane. He became the P.E. teacher at Waterford High School in the inaugural year of 1956, also teaching math, science, and health during his tenure. He loved education and learning, continuing on to receive his Master's Degree from UConn in 1956 and his 6th Year Degree in 1958. He retired from Waterford High School after 28 years but not from learning. After retirement, he attended Garfield College in Painesville Ohio, enrolling in the Physician Assistant Program returning home due to illness. He later graduated from Bridgeport University School of Nursing in 1985 with honors. His nursing career included time at Yale, Backus, and Lawrence and Memorial Hospital as well as the Pan Am Games in Indianapolis in 1987. He was the catalyst and patriarch of Waterford Athletics responsible for the entire athletic program and serving as the first Athletic Director at Waterford High School. He coached nearly every sport and doubled as the trainer well versed in sports medicine. Francis coached basketball for 18 years at Waterford High School and would slyly leave the gym open on Sunday for students from New London and Waterford to play. He started Waterford Lacrosse in 1975 but by stepping down as Athletic Director in the following year the sport lost traction until the recent resurgence of Lacrosse in South Eastern CT. Francis loved the students of Waterford acting as mentor to many, most of all he loved the comradery with the students. . He was an avid skier and organized many student ski trips. He was chosen as the first teacher to be the commencement speaker by the graduating class of 1979. Francis was committed to the town of Waterford as a member of the Waterford School Board, and the Waterford Recreation and Parks Committee. He loved his summers at Waterford Beach, directing the swimming and life guard programs at Millstone Point and later at the present location. Retirement from Waterford allowed him to coach women's softball and men's squash at Connecticut College. He was very busy with officiated girls softball, and swimming & diving meets, as well as a Red Cross Instructor. He shall always be remembered by his sharp wit and infectious smile. Francis is survived by his sister Anna and her husband Charles Waddell of Milford CT. He was predeceased by sisters Helen and Corinne. He is survived by his wife Betty, and 6 children, Robert & Kerry of Lawton OK, Gregory & Linda of Tampa FL, Cathleen Sweeney & husband David Gregoire of Old Saybrook, Michael & Barbara of East Lyme, Ann Marie & Tim Gunn of Guilford, and James & Cindy of Fond du lac WI as well as 15 grandchildren, Alanna, Sean, Cullen, Madison, Brennan, Brandon, Kyle, Erik, Bryan, Jesse, Kevin, Sean, Jamie, Kayla & Keegan, all of whom shall be ever impacted by his life. He was extremely pleased that his first Great Grandchild, due in January is to be named Xavier Francis Sweeney. Francis and his family were very grateful for the care he received from the dedicated staff at the New London Rehab and Care facility on Clark Lane in Waterford. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday the 19th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Thomas L Neilan & Sons Funeral Home on Ocean Avenue in New London. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday the 20th at Saint Joseph's Church on Squire Street in New London at 11:00 AM. He will be buried at Jordan Cemetery in Waterford. My sister was 3 years older than I. She would come home from 1st grade and tell me stories about the teachers and of course Fran was one of them. When I got to the school on the 1st day I had recess this red headed guy walked over and picked me up so that he was speaking up to me. "Are you Jackie Donnee's brother" he asked ? I meekly said yes and from that day forward he always waved to me whenever our paths would cross. I guess that's how our friendship started now that I think about it. It was fun knowing him as a kid and really fun knowing him as an adult!

A life well lived. I so appreciated "Mr. Sweeney's" kindness and encouragement even to those of us who were not great athletes. His sense of humor aways prevailed, which I now know is perhaps the most important attribute a person can have. He will be missed by many. Peace to the Sweeney Family, Lyell Fox, Class of '71

My sympathies to the entire Sweeney family for your loss. A great teacher, coach and mentor. He loved his job and he truly loved the kids and took a special interest in each and every one of them. Times were much simpler back then but kids today need positve role models like Fran more than ever in their lives. I have fond memories of many sporting events including ski trips that would not have occured without Fran's support. Over the years he impacted so many in a positive way. I cannot remember any past win-loss records but I do remember a man that truly cared for all of the kids in our community. My class (class of 1979) loved and respected him so much he was included in our graduation. Fran will live on forever in our hearts. With sincere sympathy.

When I think of people who had a positive influence on me during my formative years, I of course think of Mr. Sweeney. He taught excitement for athletics and competition, balanced with humanity and kindness. He made people feel special and helped them believe in themselves. He gave his time and love to his family, his students, his teams and his community. As many have said, it lead to a life well lived, and to being well loved. My deepest condolences to the entire Sweeney family.

What a truely sweet man. They broke the mold when he was born. A true educator, mentor, coach, and friend. Nobody has had or will have a bigger impact on the youth of Waterford than Mr. Sweeney. Loved and admired by all. Mrs. Sweeney, may you find peace and comfort in all the cherished memories of your life together. He leaves quite a legacy with your wonderful children, grands, and now a new generation. Heaven will never be the same....Mr Cip, Mr Rousseau, and Mr Sweeney together again.

It's been a few years since I last saw Mr. Sweeney, and I'm only saddened to know that I won't cross paths with him again. I have so many great memories of him as a mentor, teacher, friendly ear, wise sage, and family friend. I used to love to be there whenever he got rolling with his stories about the old days with my Dad. Every ski trip with him is locked in the memory bank. I know my Dad, Frank, and Dick are roasting and toasting him as he arrives at the Pearly Gates.

What young man passing through the Waterford school system in the last 60 years wasn't touched by this man?

Rich Wyatt

December 19, 2012

Mr. Sweeney was an exceptional person and character who made growing up in Waterford in the late 60s an idyllic existence in many ways. He was a tough coach, but along with Mr. Rousseau, he helped make men from boys for many. Saw him for years afterwards at Waterford Beach when back to the “old town” with the next generation and he never forgot a name or a face… of the seemingly countless he must have known. Hello to Greg and Bob, Mrs. Sweeney 'n family (Ann Marie), celebrate his life.

Blessings and Condolences Betty, Bobby, Greg and all the family…

My first memory of Fran (I must have been in the 5th grade) was at Great Neck School. Jerry Dunbar (8th grade) hit a very high fly ball-- I was playing with some other smaller kids and the softball (thank God !)came down and bounced off the top of my head knocking me out cold. Upon regaining consciousness I beheld Fran Sweeney kneeling over me with half the kids in the school yard surrounding him.
AN ICONIC IMAGE HE WAS! And remained that for me and all the kids I knew- especially those of us who struggled in school.
If all teachers were as caring and inspiring as he, we would need very few policemen.

Fran, you are alive to me and I look forward to seeing you again if I ever make it up there to the Promised Land.

Peace on Earth
Vonn “Joe” Hartung.

My personal condolences to the family in your time of loss. Take pride in knowing this remarkable man touched and inspired so many.
He took a special interest in every student, athlete or not. How he could remember so many of pupils, for as long as he did, practically defied gravity. He was a role model to many of us, but set a standard so high that only a very few, if any, will ever achieve.

To the Sweeney family, when I think of Fran Sweeney, I think of three senses: a sense of honor, a sense of integrity and a sense of humor. He was the Waterford "Culture Keeper". He always displayed a unique charisma, class, confidence, charm and a positive attitude. The youth now would call it "swagger". He taught lessons that reached far beyond the gym, athletic field or classroom. May the strength of his spirit and memories get you through this difficult time.

Dear Betty and family:
Mr. Sweeney (he'll always be Mr. Sweeney to me) touched the lives of thousands of Waterford HS graduates and citizens of Waterford. I know that there is no graduate of Waterford in the past 40 years who does not remember him - an honor shared by few, if any, other teacher administrator or coach. He was my coach and mentor and life-long friend. He taught me the fundamentals of basketball and instilled in me the love of the game, which I played for about 50 years. But more importantly, he taught me about life - about the importance of a good education, about working together with others, about leadership, about making good choices and overcoming adversity, about trying hard and never giving up. He started each practice with a life lesson or a good idea that he encountered in one of the many books that he constantly devoured. Only then did we begin warm-ups. On behalf of my fellow athletes and students, and that of my whole family, my deepest condolences to you and your family. Mr. Sweeney will always live in our hearts and memories.

I worked for Coach Sweeney for several summers as a swimming instructor when he directed Waterford's summer beach program. It was my first "real" job; and though it was 50 years ago, I still have vivid, fond memories of summers teaching swimming under Coach's watchful eye. I've also come to realize that Coach's rule that he never went swimming until Labor Day was a good one - Long Island Sound really is warmer (and almost tolerable) by September!

Dear Mrs. Sweeney & family, I met Fran in 1982 at the Groton Nautilus Club that Jimmy Cavalieri and Dave Sousa owned. They were all great Waterford sports friends and associates. Fran was a great instructor and made my workouts fun. And I always enjoyed bumping into him at the Stop & Shop or around town. I'm sorry for your loss. He will be missed.

What a wonderful man! He knew everyone in my family and always remembered their names. He was incredible and impacted so many of us who knew him. I never missed a chance to say hello to him when I saw him. My deepest condolences Betty and family.
