Early 80s, I just moved out into my first 1 bedroom in the West End, somehow, all of a sudden I had Guy and Amer (friend of ours) living with me (where did we fit?!)... we had good times, started the circle-below-the-waist punching game, dancing at the love affair, introduced him to photography... it started a fantastic friendship, the 3 amigos disbanded, but kept in touch sporadically over the years... miss you Guy, you and your electric personality...

I am saddened to hear about Gaetano's passing. I had the privelege of meeting him 16 years ago, when he was my photographer performing my first ever model test. He made me feel at ease in front of his camera lens at only 14 years old...he helped launch my career as a model, and I owe a big thanks to him. I was lucky enough to work with Gaetano again last year, and it was then I learned that he was much more than just an extraordinary photographer. Thank you Gaetano. You are a true inspiration to me. You touched my life, and I'm sure the lives of many other models that have worked with you over the years.

I have known Gaetano for over 30 years. We grew up about 5 blocks from each other in East Van. It wasnt until the club days at Pharoahs is when we really began our bond as friends. Gaetano eventually came to work for me at my fitness business called Body Fit Studio. Typical Guy he would come in for the 4:30 class, teach the 5:30 class and then hang out and take a late 7:30 class. Afterwards, Guy would go home, eat ice cream, and dance all night at the Luv Affair. His Mother Anna Maria told me a cute story that she would bake all her biscotti in advance for Christmas and then freeze them. One day Gaetano told her she should start baking again. When Anna Maria opened the freezer she was shocked to see that Gaetano had raided the freezer right down to the crumbs. I can sum up Gaetano's life in one Sentence "La Dolce Vita e La Dolce Gelato. I can close my eyes and listen to a song that Gaetano liked and I can envision him so clearly. Whip it by Devo has Gaetano in Italy taking photos of models, streets, buildings...a new passion has emerged. The The Uncertain Smile has Gaetano wearing his sony headphones strolling around with his walkman eating a pita wrap and having of course a gelato around English Bay Jim Devlin and I found this passage in his Ipad..Wouldnt it be great if we can wake up every morning with the thought that something wonderful is about to happen. Thank you Gaetano for being such an inspiration to all of us and being such a wonderful friend.

Gaetano and I met twenty years ago. From the moment I met him, I knew that I was in the presence of a truly fantastic human being. We remained friends throughout the years..even through both of our comings and goings, we would inevitably run into each other and share our stories of adventures. Gaetano was and will always be a true inspiration to me. I love you my friend and will miss you very much.

I met this courageous man but once. However, what a memorable experience it was. He was the photographer at my daughter's wedding (Carrie Wheeler and her now husband Jaman Lloyd). We sat together and had fabulous conversa-tion. His smile was sincere. He will be saddly missed by all, and remembered graciously. A remarkable young man too soon gone for his time.

Gaetano my friend, I miss those mornings at Starbucks in Gastown where we would get lost in long chats about photography, life and your positive perspective of never being a victim of this horrible disease. You looked at it as a slight speed bump in your journey. When some medical people said "there is nothing more we can do"...you replied "yes there is, I am going to keep fighting and live" and you did. It's time to rest my friend. I will miss you, our chats, your talent and your spirit.

I first met Gaetano twenty some years ago as I was immersing myself into the fantastic world of photography. I always saw him as a beacon in the photography world with unwavering vision and true conviction to his art.
Over the last number of years his strength, courage and positive nature defined a different side of Gaetano. To me he also became a beacon to the strength of the human spirit.

Start the music. Cue the followspot. Heaven will never be the same. We found Guy dancing in a Vancouver club and recruited him and dance partner Brad Wray on the spot. A ragtag band of wanna-be models and dancers who loved to perform, Knew York Productions played all the hot club venues and Guy and Brad never failed to dazzle. Atomic energy, sheer joy and a smile that lit up the world....that was Guy. Beautiful boy, your memory is forever etched into our hearts. Dance on....

After briefly reconnecting with Gaetano about a year ago and just hearing of his passing yesterday I've felt a profound sense of loss and wish I had stayed more connected. When we spoke a year ago I sensed a certain peace and acceptance in his demeanor but he was always so zen even in the early days.

I'm sad that such an amazing soul was taken from us so soon but I'm so grateful that we all experienced days on this earth with him.

Thank you my friend for making me look so much better in pictures and thank you for all of the laughs. I look forward to seeing you again on the other side and hope you're there snapping pictures as we all come through to join you.

March 11, 2011

My deepest condolences to Gaetano's family. I am really sorry for their loss.

It has been a long time since I've seen him - the last time was on the streets of downtown Vancouver before I moved to Seattle. He was such a big part of my late teenage years. I was with him when he started photography, and bought him his first light meter!

I'm glad to learn that he has had a happy life, and regret that it is already over.

Ciao, Gaetano.

We met Guy at Templeton , he was the senior high schooler and we were just in as the newcomer having emigrated to Canada in the year of 1979. We thought right away that Guy was different than everyone especially in that era. He was ahead of his time.
He distincted himself especially in fashion and art. We ran into him other times as we were growing up in Vancouver , especially in the
nightclub scene, we looked up to him many time for his innovative dancing moves. He will surely be missed.
Our condolances go to the family.
Remembering you Guy.

I remember Guy the first time me and my sister were welcomed to Templeton school back in 1979. We just emigrated from Italy, Guy was there being few years older than us and we were struck as he was very different from everyone. We thought in our young age he was very cool. After the school years later we would run into him at some disco and nightclubs known at the time. We always liked the way he danced and sometimes he was like an idol to us. he will always be the person who made us feel very welcomed and I will always remember him with a big bright smile on his face. He will be surely missed.
Our condolances to the family .

I cannot remember a time when Gaetano was not in our lives. We would bump into each other on the streets of Milan during the crazy times in the 80's, then reunite once back in Vancouver. The gentle yet strong way Gaetano moved through the world was such a gift to behold!!

As artists, our goal is to show our creative visions. In some respects exposing the public as to how we see things through our own eyes, our soul.  Gaetano’s images of people and places have taken all of us to beautiful and desired place that seems to be mysterious but familiar. We will continually see his images and remember his talent, but Gaetano will be forever remembered as a fighter with a passion for life.  Our family will remember you.   I look around me and see my family, a sunset, a sunrise and other beautiful things to photograph. I'm saddened that we will no longer see how Gaetano sees the world, but he will forever changed how we see ours.

Dear Maria….We’ll never forget that wonderful meal at your home with Gae showing off your incredible cooking and what a happy night that was. You and he were the beginning of our love for everything Italian. We and our kids spent many fun times with Gae. He gave so much on a creative and personal level. Just thinking of his smile and hint of a raised eyebrow and sparkle around the eyes reminds us to look at the world with a sense of humor and to not shy away from adventure. He lived many lives in one and made ours better. All our love to you and your family from ours,

Just feeling like sharing the magic of Gaetano and his Luv-A-Fair with me and many dancing partners in his life... His courage and gift to be in the now, as we watched birds eat crumbs in so many cafes: Paris, Milan, Toronto, LA, English Bay. And we wish to honor how he built such strength in many of us who danced with him...Our daughter Azara was so touched that she was born on his same birthday and that she can keep dancing for him.

To Gaetano's wise words we dance:
--------------------------------------------

"Hi Fiona,

I am feeling and doing great.
I have kept a really low profile and have eliminated a lot
of the chaos of everyday life and the material world away.

I also have turned away from anything that reminds me of unwellness. Resting in the now.
I am happy, healthy, and in sync with the universe. I do not speak of dis ease.
I would love to chat about life and things to do with living.
It is my desire that my friends only see me as well.
Time to move forward
> and forward.

It would be nice to see you without any distractions. One on one.

love Gaetano "
---------------------------------------------

NAMASTE: We shall be sending our blessing from the California coast, to all his friends and family, as we follow his wise words and be 'here in the now'. *Please could a friend email forth some special moments from his day of honor to share with our family. [email protected]

DANCE ON TO YOUR MAGIC BEAT- WE SHALL DANCE WITH YOU IN THE NOW AND HEAR YOUR WISDOM IN THE WIND
.....................................................................
Guy was a 30+ year Luv-A-Fair-What a hero and deep friend to me and to many - As we met in our teens and romanced the world - We froze both our cameras together in Toronto, then juggled Paris, Milan,Tokyo>>To rest back often in the views over Vancouver & English Bay- The hardest thing I ever had to do was to hold his hand and walk him over for medical tests- I knew his swollen lymph nodes had given us a secret. He said it was a stomach issue from bad sushi-In the magic way he danced, we each had our own beat. We both pursued the 'raw diet angle' and then his lung collapsed- Each time I was just in town for a short visit, there to hold our 'friendship hand'.

His courage was evident, we admired his dancing in all stages. His gifts to keep in the NOW.

My kids have climbed all over him and he has laughed with them. His wise words have kept me on track in life and true to parenting from the heart!

It is his gift of truth that we can take with us all and hold his hand to dance.

Fiona, Azara, Chandara, James and the 'SPIRIT WIND'

We shall be camping with the family this weekend on the Malibu coast and blowing our wishes to him and the family and will be hearing his wise words in the wind! If other old friends wish to re-connect email us: [email protected]

Ahhh... we had so many laughs & intense conversations over the years. Our bond started as two British Columbians in the Milan fashion scene. You helped me rip off the veneer & see what lay underneath, artistry, passion, & culture. Firey Gaetano, there are some sparks that never go out.
