Scottsdale, Arizona - Garnold S. "Gary" Nelson died on November 6, 2010 at the age of 88 at Scottsdale Healthcare - Osborn Medical Center. Gary was born on November 6, 1922 in Garretson, South Dakota, a small town approximately 30 miles north of Sioux Falls in farm country. He entered the armed services during World War II at the age of 17 with his mother's permission and entered Weather School. He eventually became a fighter pilot in the Air Force. He fought in the Pacific theater during World War II, in the Korean War and eventually served in the Air National Guard at Joe Foss Field in Sioux Falls, SD. He served twenty-two years in total. He graduated from The University of South Dakota with a degree in Mathematics. He was an Independent Businessman and Motel Operator in Sioux Falls, SD and Minneapolis, MN. He loved flying, playing tennis, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 59 years - Margaret, his son - Gregory Thomas Nelson, his wife - Michele and their daughter - Kori Louise, and by his daughter - Paulla Ann Nelson-Shira, her husband - Mark and their children - William Nelson and Carolyn Ann. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 11th at Messingers Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85251 (480-945-9521). The burial will follow at Paradise Memorial Gardens, 9300 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale. Maggie and family of Gary,

Our heartfelt condolences to you. Gary was a wonderful gentelman and hero whose love of his family and country can't be denied. He was always smiling and he will be missed. We just heard of your loss today and are sorry we didn't know of his death earlier. You are in our thoughts and prayers. He was one-in-a-million!!!!
