Inspiring and challenging colleagues and friends

I first met Gavin in the late 70s when he was lecturing in Health Economics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Although my Public Health career has been largely in the UK, our paths again crossed in Tasmania's Huon Valley, where my husband and I are also recent semi-retirees. We formed instant colleague rapport and friendship with both Gavin and Dell and looked forward to strengthening this. Sadly and tragically this will not now happen. However, their passion for equity, fairness and social justice, their published work and our reflections on the challenging discussions we had will endure. May Gavin and Dell rest in peace.

We thank Gavin and Del for the inspiration and leadership that they have provided here in Tasmania, where we have been blessed by their presence for all too short a time. They will be missed in Australia and more broadly among an international community seeking a fairer, more sustainable and healthier world. Fiona and I felt ourselves at the beginning of a journey of friendship with an extraordinary pair of wonderful people. Gavin and Del will always be appreciated for their generosity of spirit, their passion and their thoughtful contributions.

Very exceptional and special people who lived and work for the marginalized. Prof and Del were very kind people and true friends. Just 2011, Prof and Del visited me and my family in the most deprived area in Ghana where i work. Del was arranging to financially support my wife's Primary school needy kids from the proceeds of her book is about to be published. On behalf of my family our condolences to the family and loved ones. May their gentle souls find rest in the LORD

Gavin and Del were remarkable and special people. We were very fortunate that they chose to live in Tasmania and that we knew them, all too briefly. They taught us much about integrity, equity and living with love and respect for everyone. I met Gavin through my work in public health, and my husband Paul and I were friends with both of them.
