I was a student in 7th grade at MVCDS; "Mr Chapman" was our history teacher. He was all of maybe 24 years old. He was hilarious and we adored him. Many years later-as in 50 years-I was in the Delta club at Laguardia airport and I said to my then husband "see that guy sitting over there, that´s Mr Chapman" and I went over to him and said "are you by any chance George Chapman?" and he said "yes"-and I said "do you know who I am?" of course the answer was "No" because at that point I was 60 years old, not 12- and I said "it´s me, Carrie!" and he jumped up "Carrie!"and gave me the biggest hug. I only learned about his death today from an old MVCDS classmate. 75 is way too young. I send my love to his family.

George and I attended law school together and I have only nice memories of him. Mostly, I remember how soft spoken he was and always a gentleman. By gentleman, I mean both gentle (especially for his size) and a soft spoken man who always treated people with respect. We played touch football on the Midway first year, and George was big and fast - a very good athlete. I know he leaves a lifetime of good works and many, many admirers. I'm very sorry to hear this news.

Cornell University and Big Red Athletics are incredibly fortunate to have many former athletes who have had great professional success, who are philanthropic, and who provide generous support to their teams so that those who follow have as good or better an experience. George epitomized that ideal. A proud member of the Class of 1969, he was tough on the grid iron and a formidable basketball player. George established an endowment that will serve Big Red Basketball in perpetuity. In recognition of that, Cornell was honored to name the "George L. Chapman Class of 1969 Athletic Director's Suite". Over the years AD Andy Noel and I shared many very enjoyable dinners with George... in Naples, Toledo and on the Hill. We'll never forget the trip to Toledo to watch the Big Red take on the Rockets in the Savage Center. Leslie and George could not have been more gracious hosts, to our coaches, team and to Andy Noel and me. We were proud of George's success, incredibly appreciative of his benevolence, but more than anything, thankful for his friendship. Rest in peace good friend.

George was beloved at his undergraduate alma mater, Cornell University. While his basketball skills were considerable, his level of care and generosity, on behalf of our young adult athletes, was uncommon.

What a wonderful guy. Tom Furey and I beat George and Lynn in an old pal match years ago. I never played with him again but he never stopped accusing me of being a "bandit". Of course it was his way of showing his friendship. Rest in peace

To The Chapman Family,

Please accept my condolences on the passing of George.
I am so sorry.
What a tremendous and accomplished man. Tall, handsome, an incredible athlete, an incredible and successful businessman, whose contributions to Maumee and Toledo and all over the world were extraordinary. His philanthropy exceptional.
He was a wonderful teacher and a wonderful, yet tough and demanding coach. I learned so much from George.
I always think of him during March Madness.
This is a total shock.
I am honored to have known you.
Rest In Peace George.
Respectfully,
Michael Zerner
